mainly because it taught a generation of young Americans that you could buy your way out of punishment

If there ever is or was a "generation" of young Americans which has any idea who Marc Rich is and/or was, I would be pleasantly surprised.

I agree with your statement about awareness about Rich, but I still the lesson referred to was imparted.

People DO remember that Clinton got impeached but that instead of being shamed he wears it like a badge.

People DO remember that he pardoned a lot of people and that in some cases it seemed that some sort of payoff was involved, even if they don't remember the details. And again, they know that the Clinton the Pardongate perp walks around as a celebrity with a best-selling book, a multimillion-dollar annual income from speaking fees, and admiration bordering on awe from a substantial segment of society.

So even though people don't remember Rich, too many learned the wrong lesson.
