I should have said it was a theory, and by definition hasn't been proven.
There are other theories and it is a matter of opinion, even scientific opinion, whether or not those theories are "scientific."

Actually, it's a matter of fact. To qualify as a theory in science, an explanation must fit a number of criteria, including (but not limited to) only addressing the natural universe, making meaningful predictions and having a set standard for hypothetical falsifiability.
