HARRISBURG, Pa. The state American Civil Liberties Union (search) plans to file a federal lawsuit Tuesday against a Pennsylvania school district that is requiring students to learn about alternatives to the theory of evolution (search).
The ACLU said its lawsuit will be the first to challenge whether public schools should teach "intelligent design," which holds that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by some higher power....

I have to admit you got me thinking last night. This is the way I understand the Catholic position: Life is a puzzle with a definite beginning and end. The whole purpose of the puzzle is to find out what the picture is at the end, thus, the human curiousity for truth. For some, they need only the four corner pieces, and see the whole picture, others, need the border, others need all the pieces. And then some, complete the puzzle but never comprehend the whole picture, and others can't get two pieces to connect. All are equally human and equally curious. Essentially, it doesn't matter how you get there, just as long as you get there.
So whether your Creationist of Evolutionist doesn't matter as the search for truth is a spiritual journey. IF one believes that science is contrary to the literal interpretation of the Bible, the Catholic Church says No big deal, because the end is still the same. If any evolution has taken place, there was an intelligence behind it. If someone doesn't feel that evolution is a comprehensive enough explanation and believe in the literal interpretation of the bible, the Catholic Church says No big deal, because the end is still the same.
The only caveat I would like to add is that it is not all evolution he feels is more than a hypothesis - it is "certain theories of evolution".
Well, let's see, we have the atheistic Islamic terrorists spread out over half the world. But we shouldn't forget the atheistic Catholic and Protestant terorists in Northern Ireland; or the atheistic Buddhist terrorists in Japan; or the atheistic Sikh and Hindu Terrorists in India and Sri Lanka.
Some lies are just comical, they're so outrageous.
That is a splendid compliment. Thank you.
It's important to understand the terminology that is being used here. In science, an hypothesis is a scientific explanation of certain observed facts. And it's one that is testable by experiment or by searching for other information that will either support or contradict the hypothesis.
When an hypothesis has been tested, repeatedly, and survives, it becomes known as a theory. A theory is as good as it ever gets in the world of science. It's still subject to further tests, but until it's toppled by new evidence, it's at the pinnacle of the hierarchy of scientific ideas.
So when the Pope says that evolution is "more than an hypothesis," he's making a very significant statement. He's saying that evolution is a scientific theory that's survived a whole lot of testing for a very long time, and it's not something that we can dismiss or disregard. Instead, he's saying that the church has to deal with it, and they can't interpret scripture in such a way as to deny it.
I understand what your saying, but I researched that very thing last night. What I found clearly suggests that the Pope is scientifically naive, and that he would not believe in a theory of evolution which would remove an intelligent designer. He will not believe in a theory that alleges to disprove God. In fact, this is a distinction that Catholic Church wants to make clear after his 1996 statement. The Church warns about misinterpretation of his position.
I hope you weren't going to creationist websites. They really are notorious for misunderstanding things. ("Misunderstanding" is a polite term for what they do.) The Pope is very well advised on scientific matters.

Not a problem. That has never been a goal, or a consequence, of the theory of evolution. Relax. It's just a theory about biology. The Pope isn't being bamboozled. Check out that Pontifical Academy of Science that I linked yesterday. The Pope has the very best people advising him.

Certainly. The Pope's statement makes it clear that evolution -- to the extent that he accepts it -- has nothing to do with man's soul. And it has nothing to do with God. That's always been true, and no sane biologist claims otherwise. (But I can't say the same for some creationists, who are looking for a cosmic struggle where none exists.)
Big Bang cosmology, proposed in the thirties by our former President, Father Lemaître, is today confirmed by innumerable results, ranging from cosmic background radiation and its observed fluctuations, which beautifully mirror the birth of galaxies, to the relative abundance of chemical elements in the universe. The development of molecular biology has clarified the mechanisms underlying the evolution of living organisms, and has also provided the basis by which to establish a complete genealogy of life from humble bacteria to the higher organisms.Nice to know the old church sees the beauty of science.
"micro-flood" is a term invented by Darwinists to deny the results of Floodation.
Microflood is atheistic nonsense. The way of the future is ID (Intelligent Deluge).
"Apres moi, le deluge." (Just seemed appropriate.)
Thanks.
