HARRISBURG, Pa. — The state American Civil Liberties Union (search) plans to file a federal lawsuit Tuesday against a Pennsylvania school district that is requiring students to learn about alternatives to the theory of evolution (search).

The ACLU said its lawsuit will be the first to challenge whether public schools should teach "intelligent design," which holds that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by some higher power....

What exactly is the evidence you actually observed that disproves the Earth is 6000. Could it be that there are a lot of assumptions made that maybe ought not be made? Have you researched this at all independently or are just jumping on the bandwagon because its easier to be against something than for something.

Please point out to me where I stated that God does not exist? Belief in Him is a matter of faith and discussion, not debate with unknown, faceless posters with an agenda.

You didn't but by agreeing with Voltaire's quote you are saying that in a scenario where a god doesn't exist (which would require that you're aware of this fact) you think it's necessary to invent one.

If c14's half-life is 5730, anything older than that is a guess or assumption, or as you say, a projectin. Not truth in fact, truth in your opinion of circumstance. But, there are no absolutes in life, remember that!

It can be? Boy are you smart! So, pray tell, what reference frames are you referring to?

C-14 isn't the only isotope used for radioactive dating. Other isotopes with longer half lives are used to date objects back into the billions of years.

A very disturbing case. Not all that dissimilar to the Swedish case. Do you know what became of the charges against Marcavage?

In 1999, 18% in fact believed the sun orbits the earth.

Once again, a few years ago I would be shocked by this statistic.

But after reading some of the stuff spouted on these threads, its sadly believable.

We can prove the earth is older than 6000 years just by counting tree rings . This is grade-school science.

Is your name Jack Chick by any chance?

She sounds a lot like "ConservobabeJen."

Right. A scientific measurement. I am glad that you have finally agreed that C-14 dating can be used to measure beyond 5730 years.

Hmmm... who really are the gullible ones - those that believe we came from a rock and our conscience from a viral mutation, or those who believe we were designed by intelligence? I think Jesus used to be feared in this fashion as well.

It's easier to be against something than for it, so, who's gullible?

Frankly, I think it is rather transparent for misinformed self-righteous ideologues to do nothing but attack and cut down anyone who does not share the same opinion of ABG "anything but God".

The sense of power from blogging criticisms of people's most heartfelt beliefs as if they were disposable and unimportant must be profound. Must give you a sense of power to be indifferent to something you don't understand but choose to ignore as it may require some personal responsibility. In the very least, require you to step down from your throne.

I'll pray for you and yours because it is your blindness that will be your downfall. Or dare I say, your gulliblity.

That shows a basic misunderstanding of radioactive decay. The half-life is of no particular signficance; it's just a benchmark. If we defined a 'quarter-life', the time it took for 3/4 of the nuclei to decay, we'd have a quarter-life of 11460 years, longer than your supposed age for the earth.

We've calibrated the 14C scale by comparing it with ages from tree-rings. You do know how to find the age of a tree by counting its rings, right?

How do you know for certain that the half-life of c14 is 5730 years? Yes, my question makes a lot of sense, but your afraid to say that you "assume so".

Another poster gave you a detailed source on that issue a few minutes ago. Did you read it?
