...Think about the Kerik example: The man and his wife have two small kids.... A nanny offers that help, and she seems both nice enough and gets along with kids. Whether or not she's "legal" seems less important to most American parents than whether she's trustworthy and hard-working.
As for the nanny, she's traveled hundreds, if not thousands, of miles from home to make some money and get ahead. Her primary concern isn't running some Immigration Service gantlet but is to find a good family that pays decently and treats her well. Are we really supposed to believe that this kind of transaction between consenting adults jeopardizes our national security?
...Congress made some progress on the so-called nanny tax issue back in 1994, raising the threshold for complying and simplifying the process by which employers file taxes for their domestic help.
...Most Americans calculate the costs -- in time, legal advice and hassle -- of filling out all the forms, and they simply pay cash instead. The wage threshold should long ago have been raised far higher.
As for immigration law, the Bush Administration is headed down the right path with its guest-worker program. That proposal acknowledges that immigrants fill vital jobs, that movement across borders is inevitable as long as there is the lure of opportunity, and that merely adding more border guards won't stop migrants in any case.
The Bush plan would provide a legal means -- a three-year work visa -- for new immigrants to enter the country and take jobs Americans don't want. Some of them could even be nannies. That system would make it easier to track all foreigners, freeing up our homeland security forces to concentrate on terror threats, rather than rounding up the usual nanny suspects....

Dear Innisfree,
"I don't find the use of slave labor from Mexico amusing in a political candidate of any stripe."
Slave labor?
I'm not big on illegal immigration, I'm not big on illegal aliens working as nannies. However, around here, an illegal alien who works as a nanny will typically be paid about $10 per hour.
Tax-free.

"Most American parents" don't have nannies.
I did find it humorous that you started out your post with "the law is stupid", considering your screen name. Add to that the fact that your first ever post to me included "f***ing" something or other.
No respect for the law or people. Some doctor or lawyer. I'll bet you have an illegal maid yourself. LOL
Sorry Travis, Post 63 was intended for DoctorLawyer.
(Is this the best thing since enchiladas, or the worst nightmare since Friday the 13th?)

Oh no, the Journal is empathizing with the day to day struggles of Joe and Jane Six-Pack in finding a reliable nanny.
My position is not absolutely backwards. This country will never take the position of rounding up millions of illegals and deporting them. It will not happen.
Hence, why not make them illegal and begin collecting taxes on their labor. That is the better political and economic position.
Si sólo piensa más acerca de la situación, usted tambien empieza comprender que tengo razón.
As usual, however, those on the coasts (blue states)and large (blue) metropolitan areas have lived with third world populations around them for so long that they do not comprehend what they are envisioning for all of America: rampant crime; poverty; diseases that were cured in the U.S. generations ago; Emergency Rooms closing due to lack of resources; teachers and schools being forced to spend massive amounts to educate Spanish speaking children and food aid programs for the children of illegals; all in the name of cheap (read slave labor) for corporations, working mothers and everyone desiring clean homes.
Can someone post the rest of the article ?
For me, it's not even a moral issue. It's a very practical issue regarding susceptibility to blackmail.
This was true for Clinton just as much as it was for Kerik. If a foreign intelligence agency had cottoned on to Monica before she became public, they could have led Clinton around by the nose. He jeopardized the security and independence of the whole country to sate his own selfish desires.
Anyone who cheats on his wife is unfit for a position of public trust, and you don't have to be a blue-nosed Bible thumper to see why.
LOL! Thank you for your calm and collected, cussing, CAP KEY rant for "critical analysis."
ROFL, good one.
The sad thing is that Kerik is probably a multimillionaire now what with all those stock options he has on that Taser gun company, and he's too damn cheap to pay for a legal, domestic nanny. Pretty pathetic.
Gotcha. Threw me for a moment though, LOL!
Most people don't hire illegal aliens. You're making excuses.
"If only you think more closely about the situation, you too will begin to comprehend that I'm right."
Do you think whipping out your high school Espanol 101 will win us over, cabron? Vaya al carrajo, cono.
But since you are a lawyerdoctor your analysis is the one we should all listen to? LOL.
As a newcomer here you should know there are many physicians, lawyers and PhDs here who don't feel the need to identify their credentials in order to bolster their arguments.
The F***ING was not the only word in my analysis. But, I apologize for saying a bad word. I will now go and put my nose in the corner for you teacher.
I don't speak Spanish. I guess I'd better start learning.....
I only regret that I used piensa. I should have used the future tense "piensará."
