Probably a worse sentence would be life. Death gets him solitary in a state where no one is executed. So he's safely tucked away from the rapists (and worse) in prison.

I'm sad that he won't have to live in fear of other inmates & will get to have his own cell/safe haven.

It probably means he will spend the rest of his life on death row..... instead of somewhere else in the prison.
