"As a classical Christian school, we think it's important for our students to be able to think and not be slanted to a particular position," Stephenson said. "We want them to think for themselves."

It's hard to argue with that sentiment, and as a private institution the school is not beholden to the government for resources.

Jesus taught that all men are equal in the eyes of the Lord.

The DOI taught that we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights among those life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

The disciples of Jesus of Nazareth and the founders of our country were simply men. Being men, they were fallible and subject to the practical matters of the day. But they were also wrong in not condemning slavery, just as politicians today are wrong in allowing full term babies to be murdered.

There are absolute truths. Owning another human being is wrong. Murdering the innocent is wrong. Always was, always will be.

Slavery in any form is an abhorrent abomination. It is a stain on this country's history. It matter not the least whether or not the slaves were comfortable or well cared for because the slavery itself was a poison to the spirit of both the slave and the slave-owner.

It is and always will be an indefensible evil.

Unless it happens to want to take vouchers, that is.

I'd need to see the book before I could make a real informed comment of the entire book.

But my BS detector is ringing off the charts at those quotes. Who the hell wrote that? George Fitzhugh's ghost?

The conservative side needs to kick certain people to the curb (just as the liberals need to, but won't, kick out their ecoterrorists, unreconstructed communists, etc).

This is outrageous. I am conservative as well as a scholar of slavery. While I am sympathetic to the mission of the school, printing this in 2004 smacks of the defenses of slavery written in the 1850s. Quite simply, this kind of publication does nothing to advance the conservative movement -- it confirms, in fact, what many Lefties accuse us of.
