Irish choose Weis as their new coach (Norte Dame, Patriots)

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis will be introduced at a news conference tomorrow as Notre Dame's new football coach, the Chicago Tribune reported.

According to a source with knowledge of the proceedings, Weis agreed in principle to a six-year contract worth about $2 million per year. He will fly to South Bend, Ind., tonight, after the Patriots game with the Cincinnati Bengals in Foxboro, Mass., and will address the Irish at a team meeting.

Weis' hiring is effective immediately, but his move may not be complete until February because of a probable Patriots playoff run.

Weis, 48, has told sources he has almost an entire staff ready to go.

Notre Dame, according to a source close to the situation, called Bills offensive coordinator Tom Clements yesterday morning and told him he no longer was being considered.

The other man believed to be a finalist for the position was Washington Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Blache, but according to several NFL sources, Blache contacted Notre Dame officials and told them he preferred to stay in the NFL.

I hope he is at least distracted during the transition.

Go Steelers!

He's done a great job. He and Crennel should have gotten head coaching jobs last year but the owners didn't have the patience to wait until after the Super Bowl. Why would you take coordinators of teams that didn't even reach the Super Bowl over coordinators that have?!!

Well, As a matter of fact I am the first one to bitch and moan about some of Weis' play calling, but you can't argue the fact the man knows a thing or two about Offense and when to call a "special" play.

I wish him much success.

Belichick had a similar situation when Saban took the LSU job and was still the defensive coordinator in Cleveland. If there are any problems Belichick will deal with them immediately.

Dillon made his job much easier this season. It's too bad Watson got hurt. I was looking forward to seeing the two tight end set more often.

When the Steelers and the Pats met earlier this season that game was a piss poor effort not just in play calling. The Steelers came to play "Smash Mouth" the Pats thought they could win on good game management.

Sometimes it's all about smash mouth! The Pats won't make that same mistake again when they meet for the AFC Championship.

You are correct. I felt bad for Charlie last year when he missed out in getting a head coach job because the Patriots were in the playoffs and Superbowl. He is a class act and as a fanatical Patriot fan, I will miss his offensive calls, but wish him well.
He will do well at Notre Dame.

Definately!! I abosultely love the straight arm of Dillion plowing defenses over and pushing them out of his way.

BFFFFFFFFFFF!!!

If I'm Weis I just tell every quarterback I'm recruiting that I helped make Tom Brady what he is today.

That and hopefully they'll have their whole team intact. God we were missing Dillon, Branch, Light, Ashworth, Law, Poole..etc. It's amazing they only lost 34-20 considering they handed the Steelers three touchdowns on turnovers on top of the injuries they had.

I was at the Baltimore game and he flattened two guys with just a stiff arm. Defensive backs hate it when he breaks into the secondary.

Sometimes it's all about smash mouth!

Case and point...Last Sunday's Steelers - Jags game. That was one of the most physical smash mouths I've seen in a long time.

SM is how the Steelers have been winning. I mean, Roethlisberger is a decent QB, but this has all been about a hardnosed team effort.

God we were missing Dillon, Branch, Light, Ashworth, Law, Poole..etc.

But, that's been the Pats MO for years...The depth that is created with unknown players on the Pats is remarkable year after year!! Somebody knows how to coach and it has filtered down to the rest of the staff and frankly the whole organization.

With that said, you have to play better SM ball than the Steelers if you want to have a chance to win. I'm surprised that BB didn't pick that up until the second half when it was too late.

Go JETS!

I feel real good about the Jets chances today. If they studied that game film from last Sunday Steelers-Jags they will clearly see what they need to do. Martin needs to run them into the ground and is Pennington starting today? He can do it ya know.

There's only one way to play this Steelers team...Open up an industrial strength can of Whoop Ass!

The Patriots were coming back until Faulk coughed up the ball early in the second half and gave the Steelers another easy score.

The Steelers have a good defense and without Dillon the Patriots offense was one dimensional. When Brady does that play action fake to Dillon it completely freezes the opponent's defense. The linebackers have to play run first because if they don't Dillon will pick up 8 yards.

The Jets have to do one important thing today... DON'T TURN THE BALL OVER!! In other words if they're driving for a touchdown don't call another half back pass.

Yes, but that didn't lose the game. I'm telling you, the Pats needed to play SM ball to win that game especially knowing they didn't have Dillon. The Pats are all about finding ways to win without their "star" players. I'm just surprised that BB didn't pick that up soon enough.

And yes, the turnovers were a problem.
