Lockyer’s War on Two Conservative Fronts

tty. Gen. Bill Lockyer is fighting a battle on two fronts, and butting heads with conservative Californians on both sides.

Lockyer, a Democrat, announced Wednesday that he would fight an amendment to the new federal spending bill that penalizes states for keeping abortions available to all women. In a related battle, Lockyer penned a legal opinion saying school districts do not have the authority to inform parents if their children leave school for medical treatments, including abortions and drug counseling.

These two statements have turned California conservatives red with anger. While Lockyer says he is protecting the rights of women and minors, pro-family activists say he is doing anything but.

Representatives of Capitol Resource Institute, a family advocacy group, said Lockyer’s opinions show his disregard for the family.

“This attorney general has shown a bias against parental rights in the past,” said Karen England, program director of the Capitol Resource Institute.

Lockyer’s recent act to ensure abortion remains available to all California women has only compounded the frustration many conservative activists have with the attorney general. Lockyer said the new spending bill President George W. Bush signed contains an “anti-abortion” amendment that would curtail federal funds to states that force all doctors to perform or refer abortions as a way of treatment.

“With this provision, what the federal government says to California is this: If you want back your own taxpayer dollars for important programs that serve all the people of your state, you first have to refuse to protect the constitutional rights of the women who live in your state,” Lockyer said. “That is wrong, it is unlawful, and I will fight to make sure it doesn’t happen.”

He's protecting the rights of (and discovering new rights for) all women except those who have minor children in state reeducation centers schools.

Excuse me. The kids are legally my responsibility until they turn 18 and if I am sending them off for the day anticipating that that is where they will be, I, as the parent, have the right to know if they leave school be it for hanging at the mall or a field trip. And if they are receiving medical care without my knowledge....
I find myself at a loss for words at this point.

"Excuse me. The kids are legally my responsibility until they turn 18 "

I knew it would end up this way back when Rose Bird started telling use we could not force our children to obey us. Could not even set a curfew for a 12 year old.. I left for Idaho and never looked back.
