(President) Bush photo at farmers market causes row

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) - A Democratic city councilman is demanding that a baker remove photos of President Bush from his stand in Lancaster's farmers market, saying the city needs a "healing period" following the bitterly contested election.

City Councilman Nelson Polite asked baker David Stoltzfus last month to remove the pictures. When Stoltzfus refused, Polite threatened to try to enact a city ordinance that would ban all political material from public places.

"I just feel that since it was a close election and the city's so divided, that we should have a healing period," Polite told the New Era of Lancaster on Friday.

Republican Mayor Charlie Smithgall said potential visitors have told him they will skip the old city in the heart of Amish country because of Polite's statements.

"They're saying, 'What kind of crazy people live in Lancaster? We're never coming to Lancaster,'" Smithgall said Friday.

Stoltzfus, 54, of Lititz, and his wife opened the Upper Crust Bakery stand in March 2003. A Bush photo is attached to the stand portico and a photo of the president and first lady Laura Bush sits on a shelf.

The baker said he is enjoying the attention, and other standholders have shown their support by putting up photos of the president.

"It's fun," Stoltzfus said Friday. "Even the Democrats come to me and tell me, 'Don't take that picture down.'"

I'd put Nelson in a wrestling half-Nelson, and ask him to be more 'Polite' to shop owners.

I'm sure he would be happy to see a picture of Yassar Arafat or Che Guevarra.

Lititz is the pretzel capital of America. In the mid 90s, I worked in New Holland (near Lititz) and used to visit Lititz frequently. My impression was that the locals were very conservative and hated Clinton. So, folks can vote with their pocketbooks in boycotting the town and this jerk will be voted out of office. The next time you buy pretzels, odds are, they come from PA near Lititz.

BTW, PA is the mushroom capital too. There are actually mushroom restaurants in Reading where all entrees and soups are mushroom based. We were surprised the ice cream didn't have mushroom toppings!

methinks you mistitled this, as it obviously should read "poor loser at farmers market causes row."

Some people's children, eh?

translation: "I just feel that the photo of Bush reminds me that he is the President and it kills my buzz." I think he should have a healing period after his face is kicked in.

It seems your asinine public stance has united the remainder of the Lancaster County population against you, and given rise to national news articles.

LOL. Great email. Polite will be red faced all day after reading it.

It looks as though City Councilman Nelson Polite is just a little bit of fungi growing under those mushrooms. Now that the media has dragged him out into the light, he'll probably just shrivel up and go away :)

Kind of ironic they guy's name would be Polite.

I'm kind of surprised about left-wingers in Lancaster. Perhaps the inner depths of the city are libs, but the county as a whole was big-time GOP when I used to travel through there.

Isn't it funny (well, not really, but spare me the rhetorical device) how "healing" for libs always seems to mean "Conservatives get subjected to social censorship"? Where I used to live, only the libs put offensive bumper stickers on their vehicles. It's not like this baker dude did anything patently offensive. It's just a picture, for pete's sake.

Lemme guess, Nelson M. Polite is a homosexual, card-carrying member of the ACLU.

"Begin" nice catch on the addy of the above mentioned commie. Fortunately I passed out before I could complete my expletive filled email to it.

I just wish there was a web site for the pro-Bush Amish supporters so I could buy some Christmas gifts through them.

I know they don't believe in that, so too bad, but thanks to them anyway.

Turducken is my far flung family web gift this year, but a touch of solid Amish patriot citizens wouldn't hurt.

Polite must be blocking his email - no success.

You might try the mayor, with copies to the other Councilmembers. There's a Stoltzfus there - wonder if he's any relation?
