I have been lucky. In my life I have had only one friend who did that during his life; but he was interesting in that he was an engineer and he traveled, with his family, to "exotic (for the time) places for work and spent a few years each time, so it was actually fascinating, and mostly factual, with few embellishments.
For example, the time he was asked to sell his youngest daughter, who was around 9 at the time, in Egypt.

Customer: What?
Jake: Your women. I want to buy your women. The little girl, your daughters. Sell them to me. Sell me your children!
Customer: Matre d'! Matre d'!
