It took him 70 years to figure this out? Give me a break! As if life itself is not complex enough for him to have already realized what we already knew, what people have known since the existence of man.

Truthfully, I think that's it, in a nutshell. Only his massive ego prevented him from acknowledging the Creator long ago, and now that he's finally broken down and done it, the same ego forces him to qualify his belief in scientific jargon.
