Americans looking for a way to support their troops in Iraq and Afghanistan this hol iday season might want to consider the USO's Operation Phone Home, a program to give pre-paid phone cards to those serving in forward-deployed locations.

[snip]

According to the USO, the phone cards are by far the most popular item requested by deployed troops.

Donations can be made online at https://www.uso.org/donate/default.cfm or over the phone by calling 1-800-876-7469.

Or, send a check, made out to the USO and with O.P.H. written on the memo line, to:

USO World Headquarters, PO Box 96860, Washington, D.C. 20090-6860.

I buy AT&T calling cards at a low price, at Sam's Club stores, and then I deliver them to the U.S.O. station at the airport.

Why are the large phone companies not doing their share?

This looks like a very worthwhile program.

Operation Phone Home (info current as of 2003)

Who:
For U.S. Armed Forces personnel deployed overseas
Cards are sent, in bulk, to sites where military are stationed

What:
International telephone calling card
For minutes of overseas long distance phone calls originating from U.S. military sites outside the United States (calling times vary based upon location of originating calls)
Countries from which the calling cards can be used include, but are not limited to: Kuwait, Qatar, Turkey, Djibouti, United Arab Emeritz, Yemen, Oman and Saudi Arabia

When:
Operation Phone Home will continue until any declared war is over
U.S. military personnel can use the phone card for six months from issue

Donation:
A donation of $20 provides one international calling card
The phone card minutes are value priced especially for our military. (For example, from Saudi Arabia the same amount of minutes on the $20 donated phone card would cost $50 retail)

They are:

http://www.usocares.org/src/uso_corporate.htm

The above is from the corporate sponsors for the Operation USO Care Packages. Those include a phone card too.

Home page:

http://www.usocares.org/src/uso_home.htm

The United Service Organizations, Inc. (USO) is enlisting support of individuals around the world to support the troops through Operation USO Care Package. These packages are being delivered to members of the U.S. Armed Forces deployed around the world to show them they have not been forgotten and to provide a ‘touch of home’.

With a donation of $25 you can sponsor a care package and include a personal message of support and encouragement. These USO Care Packages at minimum, include requested items such as pre-paid worldwide phone cards, sunscreen, travel size toiletries, disposable camera and a message from the donor thanking them for their service and sacrifice.
