WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Rob Glaser, the founder and chief executive officer of RealNetworks Inc., has been elected chairman of Air America Radio.
The liberal talk show network, heard on 40 stations, also announced it received $13 million in new investments. A spokeswoman said Glaser has been an investor in AAR and is one of the lead investors in this latest round of funding.
Air America also said it renewed contracts with Al Franken and Randi Rhodes, two show hosts. Franken, a comedian and author, said, "I have re-signed with Air America in order to spend less time with my family."
There was no announcement of Glaser's new role by RealNetworks . A company spokesman said his involvement was "personal." RealNetworks provides Webcasting services for Air America's audio streaming.
"Air America has created the hottest new brand on radio, offering some of the most dynamic personalities and programming found anywhere on the radio dial," Glaser said in a statement.
U.S. Supreme Court justices quizzing attorneys in Tuesday's hearing about wine shipments from out-of-state vineyards showed some sympathy for the winemakers, according to the Los Angeles Times. Its report of the arguments included the observation that most of the justices sounded surprisingly skeptical of the states' argument to prohibit shipping. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was quoted as saying New York's law against the practice seemed less about protecting minors than protecting "local farmers" from out-of-state competition, the paper wrote.
Henry Copeland, founder of an Internet company that sells advertising across hundreds of Weblogs, said business is good. BlogAds is placing ads on as many as 100 blogs a day, he told Business Week Online. Six months ago, he placed ads for only 10 companies on 20 blogs. "More money (will flow to) more (blog) authors as smart advertisers bypass publishers and pay authors directly for their audiences," Copeland told the news service. He said current advertisers include Sharp Electronics Corp. and the Walt Disney Co. .
EBay has begun offering a free service for people who want to buy items. "Want It Now is a new format enabling buyers to let sellers know what they are looking for and allowing sellers to respond to buyers with eBay listings," the company said on the site. Here's the Want It Now page .
About 30,000 would-be buyers have signed up to use the service, according to InternetRetailer.com. Sellers are allowed to browse the want ads and then send the buyer a link to an item for sale on Ebay. They cannot contact buyers and try to merchandise goods directly.
Another tidbit about America Online's plans to launch a free e-mail service next year was passed along Wednesday morning by the Washington Post. An article reported that the new service will give users e-mail addresses that end with "@aim.com" related to the company's AIM service (AOL Instant Messenger). There was no start date reported for the service.

Hair Amerika is the worst excuse for talk radio I have ever heard.
I've always detested RealPlayer and refused to install it because of its built-in spyware.
Now I have a reason to detest it even more.
Should have known. RealPlayer is one of the most obnoxious programs ever. Registration screens, massively bloated, and comes pretty close to adware, IHMO. I'd almost prefer Windows Media Player to it.

real has always sucked lol. If they arent complaining about Apple or Microsoft they are sucking it up with their outdated media player that blows. The only thing I use it for is to watch German TV live on my computer heh. I wish I didnt have to use it for that.

I remember uninstalling a few times too. Then after a while, I'd need it to view some video clip that didn't support WMP, so I'd go and install it again. Needless to say, I was quickly reminded why I hated it so much...
I generally avoid Microsoft programs whenever possible, so it definitely says something when RealPlayer is actually worse than the Windows counterpart in my mind.
And this is going somewhat off topic, but speaking of annoying software companies, Adobe is near the top of my list. How they managed to load so much bloat into Adobe Reader 6 that it now loads 10x slower than the previous version is beyond me.
I hate Adobe. Absolute pain.

On another note, let AirAmerica play...What's the harm? We demand it it for ourselves...let them do the same.

Senator Maria Cantwell in WA State was a Real Networks executive. She used millions of her own $$$ from Real for her campaign to unseat Senator Slade Gorton. She denied until after the election that she was using so much of her own money. It was probably not legal. She barely succeeded in winning the seat. There are those of us who think she got it through shall we say "creative" means, but Slade Gorton pulled a Nixon and conceded rather than drag the state through what Democrat Christine Gregoire is now doing for the Governorship.
