Hey, my uncle was one of those engineers!

One of the many things he worked on was the doors near the air inlets, to help fix the problem of flame-out during high speed manuvers... Where turning at high speeds could create a low pressure area at the inlet on the inside of the turn, causing the engine to flame out.

I got a chance to see how the BAE workers made the thrust nozzles on the AV-8s while over there. This is the globe shaped device that rotates to direct the thrust in different directions. The guys, by hand, were hammering the metal on these big wooden shapes forming them as they went. That was over twenty years ago so there is no telling if they ever found a better way of doing it to improve cost and schedule.

My favorite engineering bit on the F4 was the little windmill generator that would pop up out of the trapdoor in case you lost your main electrical bus. It would give you enough power to your instruments to get you home.
