Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's administration is expected to scrap the costly signature design for the Bay Bridge's new eastern span and will instead recommend building a simple skyway, sources close to the negotiations said Thursday.

The shift away from a single-tower suspension span to a viaduct, similar in concept to the San Mateo and Dumbarton bridges, is expected to be announced today at a press conference in San Francisco, sources in state and local government said on condition they not be identified.

The decision to go with a skyway brings the state all the way back to the original design for the eastern span proposed by then-Gov. Pete Wilson in 1997. At the time, Bay Area leaders rejected it as unworthy of the region's splendor.

If the simple design gets built...we've gone full circle! Pete Wilson proposed it, liberals wanted a monument, delayed because we wanted a monument (not to mention cross bay politics), monument too expensive, BACK to the simple design. Freaken hilarious!

Oh, I just noticed this quote...
"It's a Soviet-style bridge, and it's going to result in an aesthetic Chernobyl,'' Jeremiah Hallisey, a state Transportation Commission member from San Francisco, said late Thursday.

Well the rest of the Bay Area is basically the Soviet Union, what's wrong with having the bridge that way?

What happened to the idea of a bridge whose main supporting pillars were sculptures of the Governator circa 1975 in various bodybuilding poses wearing only a thong? You know, the Greco-Roman-neo-Renaissance-narcissist theme?

It seems to me that the Bay Area makes the Soviet Union look like the Central Plains states by comparasion sometimes....

Splendor?????

After the homeless poop everywhere the junkies aren't shooting up, add to that the flaming queers locked in embraces worthy of a no-tell motel - the appropriate descriptive for the area is squalor, IMHO.

Screw "splendor," if they can't pay for it in San Fran, the state for DAMN SURE, shouldn't pay for their elitist design fetishes.

The state, still suffering a fiscal crisis, should build only what's necessary, not what's purdy to a bunch of elites who didn't even support the recall effort.

You tell 'em where to stick it Arnold!
