Taliban contact US on amnesty proposal

The US has said that a number of Taliban militia have accepted its arms-for-amnesty offer.

US military spokesman Major Mark McCann was quoted by the Daily Times as saying that American military commanders operating in south and south eastern Afghanistan had said that several Taliban members were willing to surrender their weapons and "join the peaceful political process" in the war ravaged country and had contacted them in this regard.

He further added that though the coalition did not have any specific names of the Taliban who were willing to give up their arms, they were aware of individual Taliban members contacting the US military field commanders and "senior provincial government officials and military representatives here in Kabul."

He, however, reiterated that the Taliban were practically of two types, the hardline Islamic militants who still "believed in their ideology and would keep on fighting till the end," and the "vast majority of the Taliban who do not share such radical views and are desirous of become part of a peace process".

You are correct. Hopefully this will work out. But like in a card game it is best to sit with you back against the wall and keep both eyes open. Parley
