I was in the Regular Army 30 years ago in a combat field division that is in Iraq right now. I learned atleast one thing there, like it or not, there is no free speech in the Army. You pretty much take whats poured on your plate and say "thank you".
I have no problem with somebody trying to make their situation better. I have a problem with somebody being used as a pawn by a reporter that has a political agenda.

Pawn? Why did the SoD initiate a question and answer session then? I agree - the military is not a democracy so why this?
I had no problem with the question or the answer - right question toask and Rumsfeld answered it correctly.
