Senate Foreign Relations Cmte. Chairman Richard Lugar (R-IN), Pres. Bush's envoy during the Ukrainian election, testifies before the House International Relations Cmte. on what he observed and learned during his trip to Kiev last month. Rep. Henry Hyde (R-IL) chairs the hearing.

I never thought I'd see the day when Ukraine's history (including man made famine under Stalin) and her importance to U.S. and NATO would be stated in a public senate hearing!!! This is a most interesting and true to fact discussion of Ukraine's present situation and it's important relationship to the world. Also mentioned is Moscow's desire to reinstate it's previous power ("Russia is a tiger that does not change it's stripes"!), and the central role Ukraine has at this current time of history.
There is a challenge to Yushchenko, to see if he is able to follow through on more democratic policies following the elections and developing Ukraine's role in global politics. Most importantly, the emphasis is on the people's right to choose their own leader. Several witnesses, including Sen. Lugar, speak in detail to the events seen this past Fall in Ukraine, including Ukrainians' courage and passion for a free and democratic Ukraine, as well as Ukraine's significance to NATO and world issues. The United State's has a commitment to Ukraine's freedom following Ukraine's voluntary dismantling of nuclear weapons."
loads of information and opinions in the form of a congressional hearing.

WARSAW (Reuters) - Russia's refusal to cooperate with the West to ensure a fair election in Ukraine signals that Moscow is slipping back to Soviet-style tactics, a senior Polish diplomat was quoted Wednesday as saying.
At a meeting of foreign ministers in Sofia Tuesday, Russia blocked a planned resolution by the Organization for Security and Cooperation (news - web sites) in Europe (OSCE (news - web sites)) calling for a fair repeat of presidential elections in Ukraine.
"What we observed in Sofia is Russia's return to its old position ... from the Cold War, when the Soviet Union saw such (international) interest as meddling in its internal affairs," Deputy Foreign Minister Adam Rotfeld told daily Gazeta Wyborcza.
"Russia is a great power, but sometimes great powers make great mistakes," Rotfeld was quoted as saying.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in Sofia Russia objected to the resolution because it could have interfered with negotiations seeking an end to the political impasse which has arisen after a rigged presidential election.
Russia is angry at the OSCE for calling the Nov. 21 election, in which Moscow-backed Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich defeated liberal Viktor Yushchenko, fraudulent.
The OSCE view was later shared by Kiev's highest court, which ordered a rerun of the second round.
The turmoil in Ukraine has been closely followed across ex-communist central Europe, much of which joined the European Union (news - web sites) this year.
Led by the biggest ex-Soviet satellite Poland, central Europeans fear that if Ukraine turns toward Moscow and abandons Western democratic procedures, a new Iron Curtain would descend on Europe right on their eastern borders.
