Baathists Reportedly Relay Money, Support

U.S. military intelligence officials have concluded that the Iraqi insurgency is being directed to a greater degree than previously recognized from Syria, where they said former Saddam Hussein loyalists have found sanctuary and are channeling money and other support to those fighting the established government.

Based on information gathered during the recent fighting in Fallujah, Baghdad and elsewhere in the Sunni Triangle, the officials said that a handful of senior Iraqi Baathists operating in Syria are collecting money from private sources in Saudi Arabia and Europe and turning it over to the insurgency.

In some cases, evidence suggests that these Baathists are managing operations in Iraq from a distance, the officials said. A U.S. military summary of operations in Fallujah noted recently that troops discovered a global positioning signal receiver in a bomb factory in the western part of the city that "contained waypoints originating in western Syria."

Concerns about Syria's role in Iraq were also expressed in interviews The Washington Post conducted yesterday with Jordan's King Abdullah and Iraqi President Ghazi Yawar. "There are people in Syria who are bad guys, who are fugitives of the law and who are Saddam remnants who are trying to bring the vicious dictatorship of Saddam back," Yawar said. "They are not minding their business or living a private life. They are . . . disturbing or undermining our political process."...."

IMO, we should invade and subdue Syria, as required by the "Bush Doctrine", and then send Iran a "cable" with the following statement: "We Know Where You Live."

I read a report in the Israeli media today which said US forces arrested 10 Palestinian Arabs in Baghdad

It is not easy to produce suicide bombers. Even in the 9/11 attacks, not all the hijackers knew the whole plan. OTOH, the Palestinians have singularly proven willing to do so...and Saddam welcomed them to Iraq.

I would hazard a guess that most to all of the suicide attacks on American troops are Palis, either already in country are brought in through Syria.

Who wants the US to invade first? Syria or Iran?

Which is more logistically-friendly to invade?

Syria is easier, by far. There was a joke going around the army that Syria would take 20 minutes to capture- 1 minute to invade and 19 to stop laughing. Iran, in contrast, is relatively huge and fairly mountainous (esp. along the Iraq border).

I can't imagine how people will squirm if/when we do find WMD were moved to Syria.

Or, perhaps better, East Israel.

Syria and Iran recently signed a defense pact. There's a good chance that if you invade one you get the other.

I'm certain that the each would come to the others' aide following attack by the US Armed Forces. LOL!

I would place my bets on this year. Sadly we might not see SS reform or other domestic issues delt with because of it.

pretty much a toss up.
syria has israel on the west and iraq to the east.
iran has iraq to the west and afghanistan to the east.
both evil countrys can come under some serious pressure at any given time.

Yeah. But the Air Force and Navy are pretty rested by now. Three to six months of bombardment would be helpful -- to winnow their assets -- before we ask them if we have to send in the rest of the best.

Just pack 'em all up and ship 'em to France. Chirac is at least partly to blame for Syria.

Syria and Iran are both making trouble to consolidate power and safety:

Syria (Syria Baath party=allied with Iraq Sunni)
Iran (Iran and IraqShiites)

Each is trying to create a power bloc. Just look at a map.
