Baathists Reportedly Relay Money, Support
U.S. military intelligence officials have concluded that the Iraqi insurgency is being directed to a greater degree than previously recognized from Syria, where they said former Saddam Hussein loyalists have found sanctuary and are channeling money and other support to those fighting the established government.
Based on information gathered during the recent fighting in Fallujah, Baghdad and elsewhere in the Sunni Triangle, the officials said that a handful of senior Iraqi Baathists operating in Syria are collecting money from private sources in Saudi Arabia and Europe and turning it over to the insurgency.
In some cases, evidence suggests that these Baathists are managing operations in Iraq from a distance, the officials said. A U.S. military summary of operations in Fallujah noted recently that troops discovered a global positioning signal receiver in a bomb factory in the western part of the city that "contained waypoints originating in western Syria."
Concerns about Syria's role in Iraq were also expressed in interviews The Washington Post conducted yesterday with Jordan's King Abdullah and Iraqi President Ghazi Yawar. "There are people in Syria who are bad guys, who are fugitives of the law and who are Saddam remnants who are trying to bring the vicious dictatorship of Saddam back," Yawar said. "They are not minding their business or living a private life. They are . . . disturbing or undermining our political process."...."
One more good reason to publicly try and execute Hussein ASAP.

"Conan, what is good in life?"
"To Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women!"
What many (almost all on the Left) don't seem to realize, is that if it doesn't succeed, the likely result is that we'll end up nuking parts of the ME in retalition before it's all over. All should be supporting the President wholeheartedly in this effort.
Waste Damascus ... problem solved.
this is OLD news-should NOT be a breaking item on FR site!
... and all the others on your ping list.
good points - a healthy and suspicious regard for our self-anointed "unbiased" media mavens is the first aware thought I like to have every morning I wake up.
That being said, the compost like most other MSM plays catchup on these matters - witness their 4 month delay in reporting on Abu Ghraib (after the Army had already announced it earlier along with the commencement of the internal investigation) or their attempt to sludge (take away the legs by reporting it 10 days after I first saw it here on the Freep...) the foiled terrorist attack on Jordan last year that came fm Syria.
They're both (Syria & Iran) enemies, both deathly afraid of a pluralistic government giving birth in Iraq - the way I see it, political shrillness fm the wapo, nyt & others is nothing more than clashing of cymbals lost in the death throes of a media who is going down with the ship and taking their Gramscian 'march through the institutions' control of the message with them.
It doesn't change the basic equation in the area, which is that we are there in the strategic center, with interior LOC, capable (and now, demonstrably willing to...) of striking our enemies. As for who comes first, that's a matter of initiative... and in this war, the American Eagle will swoop down upon its prey at the time of it's choosing.

Your FR homepage and blog are too much!
"Who wants the US to invade first? Syria or Iran?
Which is more logistically-friendly to invade?"
You move the troops to Syria and you blow up Irans nuclear reactor at the same time. You force Iran and Syria to send troops to fight the Americans in Iraq. Then you wipe all three countries off the map.
Damascus the World Headquarters of Terrorism.
In any case, priority number one in any invasion of Syria is to prevent the Baathists/terrorists/Al Qaida from escaping north into Turkey. Better to hem them in from the north somehow, so that they have nowhere to go but into the sea or toward Israel. If the terrorists escape to Turkey, expect more insurgency.
The USAF has had a recent history of being rather good at blowing the crap out of particulary nasty places.
This is why the elections in Iraq are crucial IMO.
We get a real government in Iraq and sign a set of treaty's with them that specify our role in helping to protect them.
Then, when a foreign terrorist is found in Iraq, it can be taken as an act of war. We then kick butt to protect our friends who were attacked.
A sincere "Thank You" to you and to all for your hearty participation in may what will later be called " Bush's Boston Head Fake" on the UN and the Middle East mullahs.
You guys are priceless.
Nice catch.
"Acting in coordination with Washington, to pressure Bashar Assad to cease ongoing cooperation with Iraqi insurgents and vacate Lebanon. Jordan has decided to renew a long dormant territorial dispute with Syria, and has issued Damascus with a formal demand to return territory illegaly seized in 1970....In September 1970 Syria attempted to invade Jordan and overthrow King Hussein, under the pretext of assisting the PLO uprising against the Jordanian government, in what became known as Black September. Syrian president Nura din Attassi sent his 5th Armored division to invade Jordan and assist embattled PLO leader Arafat, who was besieged in Ammans refugee camps after having launched an unsuccessful uprising against the Hashemite dynasty.

Note the highlighted texts.
Time to send in special forces into Syria for selective assissinations of Baathist idiots. Maybe to be followed up by selective airstrikes on Syrian Army bases.
They need a friendly reminder that we are looking at what they do, as well as what they say.
Last time I checked, Syria isn't even listed for the Axis of Evil linup. Coach GWB hasn't issued a revised batting order either.
