The smart Republican who wants to run for President in 2008 will do exactly this:

Non denounce the President, or his party, per se (lest he get ousted by the Big Boys of the GOP) but subtly start showing genuine support and plans for true border security and immigration reform.

Her Heinous Hillary is already doing this, so we better step to the plate.

Tancredo is often mentioned, but he's just a Congressman and is basically an unknown. Maybe pair him up with a good Governor like Mark Sanford??

You are right. We better step up and seize this issue of illegal immigration. With constraints on the Border Patrol and local law enforcement, confidence in Congress legislating forceful reform of border security is doubtful at best.
