TEXAS A&M AT KINGSVILLE GETS FUNDING FOR SOUTH TEXAS HISPANIC STUDIES

Ortiz says money coming from the National Endowment For the Humanities U.S. Rep. Solomon Ortiz (D-Corpus Christi) has announced that the National Endowment For the Humanities has awarded a $24,964 grant to Texas A&M University at Kingsville to support Hispanic studies in South Texas.

The title of the project is Hispanic Studies in South Texas. Ortiz said the funding will support a yearlong series of workshops in Hispanic Studies for faculty from four Texas A&M campuses with the aim of developing a cooperative doctoral program in Hispanic Studies.

"The Hispanic population in the United States is exploding. It is long past time for this country to commit resources to the comprehensive study of Hispanics and Hispanic life in the United States; and I am proud they are beginning in Kingsville," Ortiz said.

Coincidentally, Dallas filmmaker Kirby Warnock, who has just produced a documentary about a bloodied era in South Texas history (see "Border Bandits documentary stirs emotions" story above), made reference to the excellent historical archives at Texas A&M University at Kingsville when showing his movie in Austin on Monday.

Warnock said TAMUK and the Hidalgo County Historical Museum were the prime research resources for his film.

I have relatives in south Texas and I do not see what people see in Ortiz. South Texas lacks leadership on all levels. It is a real shame too. It is a great part of the world and I enjoy my visits there.
It will be interesting to see what happens once Ortiz leaves. His brother is a County Commissioner in Nueces County and his son is or was the Nueces County Democrat Chairman. The district goes from Corpus Christi to Brownsville along the coast. It will be a fight to replace him.
There are many retirees moving into south Texas. This is making it less and less Democrat territory. Nueces, Kleberg, and Cameron counties all went for President Bush this past election and I believe did in 2000. The Republicans in south Texas need to get their act in gear to find someone to replace Ortiz and get into leadership positions. South Texas needs it desperately!

--- uh, have these people looked at the course offerings at any major universities lately?

Sounds like a good place to have Hispanic Studies. Their school song used to be Jalisco!! I don't know if it still is or not but it sure used to be.

How about such classes as
The History of the Roman Catholic Church
Assimilation 101
Removing the hyphen

Always irrates liberals to remind them of the European influence in the Hispanic population.
