Dean Koontz brightened day of NH soldier
Manchester Union Leader ^ | December 7, 2004 | Samantha Smith

Posted on 12/07/2004 9:30:43 AM PST by Scarchin

To the Editors: My husband is stationed overseas in Afganistan. I wrote a letter to New York Times best-selling author Dean Koontz and asked him if he would mail a newsletter or something to my husband to brighten his day.

I received a handwritten response from Mr. Koontz, and I wanted to share it with you. Dean Koontz is truly a great American. Not only is he an accomplished author, but he is a remarkable human being fo caring so much about soldiers and their families. The letter I received read:

"Dear Samantha: Today I sent to Bryan a box of my paperbacks to share with his friends-and an advance proof copy of Life Expectancywhich is issued just for reviewers and which doesn't hit stores in hardback until Dec. 7.

I also told him what respect and admiration my wife and I have for our marvelous servicemen. And for your courage too, we're grateful. God bless. Dean."

This was in today's letter section (not available online) of the paper. Awesome! Shall we consider purchasing Mr. Koontz's book(s) for Christmas gifts? I certainly will!

Having read most of his books, I strongly suspect Koontz is either a conservative or libertarian. My guess is probably a conservative, because of his treatment of religion and religious belief.

Did you read his latest book The Taking? That wasn't a liberal who wrote that book, that's for sure. IOW, I agree with you.

The only thing that annoys me a bit, is that he must be gardener because he's always describing Bougainvillea and Diaschia

Ditto that.

He may not be C. S. Lewis or Charles Dickens... but the man can write a gripping, can't-put-down chase sequence!

Watchers was my favorite Koontz book also. Several years ago, radio host Art Bell had Koontz on for a 2 or 3 hour interview. Koontz came across as engaging, articulate, brilliant and humble.

Koontz is either a conservative or libertarian

Politically he is pretty libertarian (small l). I read an interview of him in Reason magazine some years ago - he has little confidence and less trust in government. Several of the books of his that I have read prominantly feature out-of-control government agencies, often involved with Federal Law Enforcement, operating way out of the bounds of law and morality

On the other hand, he seems pretty socially conservative - religious, strong believer in the real existance of good and evil, big on self defense, often featuring individuals saved through facing up to their own flawed past, often relying on the help of local semi-secret organizations of individuals who have banded together to protect themselves against social anarchy or some kind of nefarious break-away government agency.

I went to the UnionLeader site and couldn't find it on the front page. Where's the rest of the story?

Dean Koontz is great. Have read all his books except the latest. Just finished Odd Thomas a couple of weeks ago. Glad to see he supports our troops.

Koontz is the best suspense writer alive today. All of his work has a Southern California setting. Most of the action takes place in his native Orange County. I suspect much of his work hasn't been adapted by Hollywood is because he emphasizes themes that run counter to its current liberal milieu.

It's not a story. It was a letter to the editor - not available onle. However - I have the paper right in front of me. What a great thing to read on Pearl Harbor Day!

Oh! Okay. Thanks for the clarification. :o)

I agree most wholeheartedly! My wife is a big fan of Koontz's work. I've never read his stuff, but I suspect that's going to change soon. :o)

I'm with you. Mr. Koontz clearly did this privately and it was the wife who came forward. I've got a lot of books on my "to get" list, but Mr. Koontz was just added and moved to the #1 spot!
