More than 40 expensive houses under construction in Charles County were burned early yesterday in a development that has drawn criticism from environmentalists because it is next to a nature preserve. In recent years, the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), a loosely structured group that opposes commercialism and industry in the name of preserving the environment, has taken responsibility for many similar incidents nationwide. ELF did not respond to an e-mail sent by The Washington Times to its spokesman yesterday.

I think the arsonists should be imprisoned for promoting Global Warming via this unlawful fire....just joking.

......the Dept of Env Con has stated that water runoff from the hoses, created a leachate when it contacted the pressure treated lumber, thus polluting the wetland with hazardous run-off that will require the removal of approximately 4000 cu/yds of swamp dredge materials

Does this amount to forty counts of arson? Sounds like a long, LONG time in prison for someone.

Senselessly consuming supplies as fuel and creating pollution...for the sake of saving the environment?

Kind of like having sex for the sake of chastity, if you ask me.

Another point: If these individuals can be "contacted" for a response, why can't they be "contacted" by a more fitting response, such as law enforcement personnel?

These projects should be protected from eco-terrorists under Rule 308, applied liberally.

When will ELF/ALF affiliation become a capital offense?

It seems that this development is popular with upper middle class African-Americans. Incidents like this are just more chips out of a traditionally solid Democrat voting block.

40 houses burn at the same time and it is SUSPECTED arson. How can anyone have respect for law enforcement?

A stakeout for E.L.F.s couldn't be so tough, could it?

Check out the Washington Post's latest take on this: it wasn't eco-nazis, it was local racists. Legitimate alternate theory of the crime, or an attempt to point the finger of blame away from those with whom the Post sympathizes?

No Motive Found in Charles Arsons
