Witnesses: Jury Wrongly Convicted Peterson

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — In tearful testimony, Scott Peterson's (search) family and friends pleaded with jurors to spare his life, contending that he was mistakenly convicted of killing his pregnant wife, Laci.

Defense witnesses have already testified that Peterson sang to seniors on Sundays, distributed food and clothes in Tijuana and that he was a good friend and loving son.

On the fifth day of the trial's penalty phase, Peterson's relatives questioned the jury's verdict.

"I don't believe he's guilty," said his uncle, John Lathamke to see him die. It would tear our family apart."

But jurors showed no expression, some even looking away or toward the ground as Latham spoke.

Testimony in the seven-month-old trial's penalty phase was set to continue Tuesday and run into the next day before closing arguments. Jurors were expected to begin deliberating Thursday whether to sentence Peterson to life without parole or the death penalty.

Peterson was convicted Nov. 12 of one count of first-degree murder in the death of his pregnant wife, Laci, and one count of second-degree murder for the killing of her fetus.

Prosecutors say he smothered or strangled Laci Peterson (search) in their Modesto home on or around Christmas Eve 2002, then dumped her body into San Francisco Bay. The remains of the victims were discovered about four months later a few miles from where Peterson claims to have been fishing alone the day his wife vanished.

Lethal injection is too humane for this scumbag.

Nice photo of Geragos. When the case is appealed, it's standard procedure by the state-appointed attorneys to trash the defendent's attorney in an attempt to overthrow the conviction.

Nice alliteration, Scott!

and one count of second-degree murder for the killing of her fetus.

Nope, no AP agenda here.

As for his family, a death sentence for Scott will tear the family apart, but the murders of his wife and son haven't? This whole family is messed up. They act as if Scott is the second coming. Sang to seniors? Puh-lease...

Of course, Laci and infant Conner just happened to have been disposed of in the exact place where Scott Peterson happened to fish. Sure. Some other person(s) kidnapped her, killed her, then drove all the way to SF Bay and coincidentally dumped the body in the EXACT place where Scott went fishing!

Get real! He did it, and it doesn't matter how he put the body in the water. He could very well have put them in from the bridge, from the shore, or even tipped the boat over while doing it -- but he did it.

I especially love how he ended up in Mexico with a new haircut and dyed blonde hair.

That's what I would do right after my pregnant wife had disappeared and presumedly been killed.

Nope, no kenth agenda here.

It is NOT inaccurate to refer to an unborn child as a fetus.

Yes, that's right. The judge has spent a lifetime on the bench, watching his Ps and Qs, patiently following procedure and acquiring a decent reputation as a no-nonsense judge over all these years so that, when the time came, he could pounce on poor little, innocent Scott Peterson.

When thought of in these terms it might make some sense that the judge was even conspiring with the "real killers" Geragos promised he would reveal. What was that theory again? Oh, yes!... that a band of Satanic homeless people kidnapped Laci, held her until Scott's alibi became public knowledge and, with malice aforethought, obtained a boat and dumped the body where Scott had been fishing in order to "set him up" (motives unknown). Scott must be as important as he thinks he is in order for so many to want to do this terrible thing to him (not to Laci... that wasn't AS terrible as this travesty)... including, as you say, the judge himself. Whew!

I like "distributed food and clothes in Tijuana". Does anyone believe that is what he was doing in TJ?

If they give Peterson life, would that mean he would be in the general population in prison? I hope so. He'll be getting daily anal probes from his fellow cons :O

Well said. I'm still waiting for the "real killers" to emerge from the O.J. case.

Sure he could, a few counterweights and sluffing her off rather than throwing her (too visible). Looks like the mench did off his wife and unborn son. If convicted I hope he gets old sparky.

It is always heard from friends and neighbors, "I can't believe he could have done such a thing."

Hey, it happens. My neighbors said the same thing when the police showed up and started digging up...never mind...forget I said anything.

No timely trial this. No matter the fate or guilt of Peterson -- and it looks like he did the murder; having a trial in two phases is a miscarriage of due process. The jury deciding on the murder MUST have a dread understanding that if they judge wrong an innocent will die by the executioner's hand, or alternatively that a bloody murderer will be freed.

Without that dread weight -- that awesome sense of sober, full, accountable judgement -- no part of a California Murder Trial sees any genuine justice, no matter what the verdict.
