"i prefer a san sarif font"

In printing industry it's a fact (so I've been told for years) that sans-serif fonts are more difficult to read than the other. The serifs let your eye "flow" to the next letter.

Free Republic did not choose the font. I see the text on the home page and here in "Comic Sans MS" which I prefer for its informal look.

To change the font displayed on a web page where the page designer did not specify one, in Internet Explorer 6 on Windows:
Go to: Tools> Internet Options> General> Fonts. Choose the fonts you wish under "Web page font," click OK. If you like the result, click OK again.

Other browsers should give you a similar option somewhere.
