This is a difficult thread. It is hard to talk about things without making a lot of generalizations. The quantiative facts are few. A lot of this is just gut level reaction.

I will say, the missing story here is that (not a few) Japanese women have very recently (the last 1-2 years) gone head over heels over...get this...KOREAN MEN.

Unfathomable anytime before the late 1990s.

I must say, there is something refreshing about opening a door for a young Japanese female, and have her express shock at first, and then genuine female (a bit coquette-ish) appreciation, rather than having the door grabbed from me and the (American) female scowl or even, in some extreme cases, spit out "I can handle the door myself!" in a rough, truck-driver lesbianic drawl.

Most guys in the world will appreciate the natural, complementary feminine aspects of women much more than a feigned and competitive masculinity that reeks of deep 'issues' and role confusion.

Again, extreme generalizations here.

We make generalizations because they are useful, so long as we understand that they aren't universally applicable.

You're correct that generalizations are difficult. I have many very close friendships with Japanese families going back 20 years or so. I am repeating what I have learned from them and they all tell me similar stories.

I have found that when Japanese men and women live in the US, neither are eager to return to the ways of Japan, even though they may miss Japan a great deal. The women know they will miss the freedom and opportunities in our society, while the men know they will be expected to work extremely hard and have limited time with their families. Things are changing, just as things here are changing, but it takes generations for that to occur. Japan is going through a period of social adjustment.
