Picking up a neighborly present(reporting for doody)

Call it the gift that stops the giving.

A local pet group is offering a gift set to send to neighbors whose dogs think your yard is their personal privy.

For a fee, Responsible Owners of Mannerly Pets will send a cordial letter to the offending neighbor, reminding them of their community responsibilities, along with a one-month supply of doggy-doo bags. Anonymously.

"It's just another one of those couple-of-glasses-of-wine kind of ideas," said Barb Heideman, co-founder and director of ROMP, a group that advocates and raises money for Twin Cities dog parks.

Heideman and friends have their tongues firmly in cheek, but the messages offer a real service. It's a difficult subject to broach. The group offered the sets a few years ago and has gotten requests for a repeat, particularly from town-house associations fed up with shared lawns that turn into the public potty.

The letters are not nasty-grams — "It's all very polite" — although recipients don't always feel the love. A Florida recipient a few years ago threatened legal action if ROMP didn't reveal its sources, Heideman said, although the woman clearly needed the gentle reminder. During her rant, she ran down a long list of neighbors her pooch had offended.

The cost is $25 for members and $50 for nonmembers. To order, call 651-776-0307, or go to www.dogromp.org and click on products.

I get so tired of finding big piles of dog doo in my front yard. IF I could ever catch the owner I would simply shovel it up and dump it in their front yard. They take their dogs for a walk and let them pee and poo everywhere. I do not have a dog because I do not want "mess" in my yard.

Why pay? I just gather up the poop and deposit it on the offender's front porch after I have a couple of weeks' worth.

It seems to work pretty well.

get one of those signs that says to keep children and pets
off the grass due to having just been chemically treated.
the people who care more about their dog than other people's property
usually are worried Fido will lick his paws.
