Family, friends plead with jurors to spare Scott Peterson from execution

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — Scott Peterson's brother, sisters-in-law and former schoolmates took the stand in the penalty phase of his capital trial Thursday and urged jurors not to sentence him to death for the murders of his pregnant wife and unborn son.

"I would be devastated. I can't even imagine. I'd be wrecked," said his half-brother, John.

Staring toward the defense table, he added, "My little brother, I love him."

Another witness, Aaron Fritz, a friend of Peterson since high school, said a verdict of death "would be a horrendous tragedy. It would be a terrible loss of a friend, of a brother figure in my life."

Well, it's all so redundant!!!

Worthless testimony.

I'd been puking if I was on that jury.

They're all telling about SP's "prior" life.

NONE of them have known much about scott & Laci.

NONE of them have said how they felt when they learned of Laci's death! Or Conner!

NONE have said how they MISS Laci.

NONE have really mentioned LACI!

NONE have said HOW HAPPY Scott was about becoming a father!

kalifornicate isn't going to kill him even if he gets the death penalty and after 7 years if he gets life, he is eligible for parole.

What is the big fuss all about?

LOL - Actually that is EXACTLY what this defense is asking the Jury to believe. But from the sounds of the talking heads the Jurors aren't buying this tripe.

That actually brings up a good point for me Cheri. It sorts out the lingering doubt issue completely. IF Scott was really innocent, HE would get up on the stand and say so REGARDLESS of the tough examination he would have to endure. There would be nothing that could keep him off the stand IF he were really innocent. All these other people saying the same things must be infuriating to the Jury and telling the Jurors they didn't make the right decision. Yikes!!

I'll be watching for that Neenah!! I agree, Peterson is too soft to make it in an atmosphere like that. He just might get the death penalty early!! Can't say as I'd mind. Maybe some of these prisoners could carry out what this Liberal Ninth Circus is UNwilling to and in the process save California taxpayers a LOT of their hard earned tax dollars.

It does in Louisiana but there is only either 3 or 5 states (can't remember which) where life is actually that.

Case in point..Charles Manson got life, but how many times has he gone before the parole board?

Being eleigible for parole doesn't mean you will get parole, but at least you have the opportunity to try. In Louisiana, if the judge says "life without parole", you only come out of prison feet first in a body bag while riding in the back of a black cadillac station wagon.

In California, life without possibility of parole means just that: life without possiblity of parole. From an article in the San Francisco Chronicle dated January 28, 2003:

California judges have the option of sentencing convicted murderers to life in prison without the possibility of parole. There are currently more than 1, 700 people in California who have received this alternative sentence, which includes no appeals process. According to the governor's office, no one sentenced to life without parole has been released since the state provided this option in 1977.

You are right! It's California for goodness sake! He may live out his normal life span waiting for his execution. Now..... if he was in Texas........... ;9]

guess it's in the wording...some states have a thing that if the judge gives life + 1 day, the guy can't get out.

So, when the jury comes back and renders it's verdict what is the procedure after that.
Does he stay in county jail until sentencing and is then transfered to prison?
No matter the verdict I want him in prison p.d.q.

Texas has an "Express Lane,"to the execution table. (Been executing 5 per month for the past few months.)

Other states need to try this.

Must be. There is apparently one possibility for someone with the life-no parole sentence to get out. He could apply for a "compassionate release" if he has a terminal illness. Doesn't mean he'll get it, but it happens sometimes.

Charles Manson is kept away from other
inmates, so no one murders him. (good gawd!)

I don't know where he stays until the sentencing. Just guessing, probably stays in the county lockup until the judges sentences him.

Yeah your right. Manson has come up for parole a number of times. However I remember that trial, read the Prosecutors book etc. I recall that he got Death but the Death Penalty was commuted to Life. I just don't remember if it was LIFE WITHOUT!! If Life WITHOUT doesn't mean that then folks need to get angry. Peterson would likely be the type that could "charm" his way out of prison. Arrrrrrgh!! I did hear one Attorney on CTV today say that the stakes are really HIGH HERE for Peterson because IF he gets the Death Penalty, his FIRST Appeal won't be for ten years. If he gets LWOP, his first appeal will be heard in about 3 years. That's a very big difference.
