While I totally agree with the WOT and have been a very vocal supporter of Dubya's here in Italy, I don't think Archbishop Lajolo was complaining about anything. He was just stating facts. To me - mostly after years of biased reporting of the Vatican position about war, which VERY different from what we're used to think - it was very heartening to read that "necessary". He was speaking to scholars and US diplomats. This is a call to self conscience.
On the other side, the Vatican is not just a religious institution. They can't merge with one side. The Pope is the pastor of all men, even those who are darn wrong. At this moment, there are million among muslisms who won't follow the terrorists and their tyrants but are in need of a word from someone they can trust and that their leaders can't bash to harshly. It's important to undermine consensus. It's freedom we want to bring. The Vatican performs a fundamental diplomatic role -beside evangelization - and their activity is fundamental to reach places and persons you couldn't deal with otherwise.

If the war is deemed >"necessary" then the anti-crhistian feeling is unjustified. There will be less ground for the progressive catholic groups to claim tha this war is "imperialistic", and loyal catholics and patriots will be able to defend freedom with one more argument.

Always keep in mind that just like in the rest of the world and even in the USA the Amercan position is reported in a blatantly biased way by the MSM, so it is about the Vatican.

Even if the Archbishop is correct, my comment is: "So, what?"

If WOT is deemed necessary, then it's like chemo-therapy: painful, destroy some good cells, but it's necessary.
