Hundreds of letters and photographs are missing from the National Archives and its regional offices, including one presidential library. Many are suspected stolen.
The extent of the losses is detailed in a series of reports from the organization's investigative office, but the value of the items is difficult to determine because that is largely measured by historic importance and rarity.

That's impossible
perhaps the archives are incomplete.

The archives are comprehensive and totally secure, my young Jedi. One thing you may be absolutely sure of - if an item does not appear in our records, it does not exist!

I once worked four years for the Navy; every day I would bring home a pen in my pocket and every morning I would try to make sure I took it back.
When I resigned I searched the drawers and came up with over two dozen pens that I had somehow forgotten.
Odd, so many pens just hiding about - too bad I never found any missing socks.

The Archives has no strict registration system for most of the 10 billion items held around the country. Um . . . why?

In its most publicized case of theft, a cache of presidential pardons and other materials valued at $100,000 was stolen by Shawn P. Aubitz, an Archives employee for 16 years in Philadelphia. He was convicted and sentenced in July 2002 to 21 months in federal prison.Want to bet Sandy Berger does not get a sentence like this?

Bubba has the ugliest trailer in Arkansas. Wonder what a tornado sweeping thru the area would do to this cheap trailer park?

There once was a Burglar named Sandy
Whose pants made him look downright randy
But the lump in his drawers
When he walked out the door
Was 'Top Secret', not that of a dandy!

They should check Algore's house too.
"Former Vice President Al Gore did not return a bust of Abraham Lincoln that he had "inadvertently" taken from the White House until Vice President Dick Cheney inquired about the missing item six months after taking office, a General Accounting Office report on the incident reveals...
"The investigation concluded that the former vice president kept the priceless White House sculpture until July 2001, when he was challenged by an unnamed Cheney counsel."

I hope they didn't lose the Ark of the Covenant.Well, they lost it, but they still have it. It's in a big warehouse somewhere among thousands of other crates.
