OBSCENE ON TV!

FCC OK with sexual content on tube

Group hammers agency that allowed language newspapers rejected.

A television watchdog group is hammering the Federal Communication Commission for refusing to take action against two networks for featuring sexually graphic content on TV shows.

The Parent Television Council, or PTC, says the content is so explicit that when it submitted an ad including the language to major newspapers, all publications rejected it.

According to a statement from the group, PTC members filed complaints with the FCC about the content of FOX's "Keen Eddie" and the WB's "Off Centre" in 2003, and the FCC rejected both complaints last week.

By denying the complaints, the FCC is saying it believes the content is suitable for America's children, PTC contends.

"This is revolting," said the group's president, Brent Bozell, in the statement. "When did the concept of hiring a prostitute to have sex with a horse become an acceptable community standard? Chairman [Michael] Powell, when did filth like this become decent? American families deserve more from the FCC in protecting our children from overtly indecent content."

To prove its point, PTC submitted a proposed ad that included the content from both shows to USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. All of them rejected the ads.

The group says the Los Angeles Times called the ad "too explicit." USA Today said, "Our newspaper is distributed in schools and we too believe children shouldn't be reading such material." The Washington Post said that the ad is "not acceptable for family viewing." And the New York Times stated, "There are a number of words and descriptions in this advertisement that we do not accept in this newspaper."

Said Bozell: "The policies of these newspapers are not just reasonable, they are commendable. Isn't it the ultimate irony that these newspapers, which are read overwhelmingly by adults, enforce standards to protect adults from sexually graphic content, yet Chairman Powell gives the green light to let children view the same content?

"Once again the FCC has failed to do its job."

The Fox program included the dialogue about the horse, while the WB's show featured a doctor speaking to his male patient about the downside of being uncircumcised.

Parents: It is your job, not the government's, to monitor what your children watch on television.

"Parents: It is your job, not the government's, to monitor what your children watch on television."

Agreed, but I have to say, as the parent of three pre-teens, it's rather dismaying trying to find acceptable programming these days. Thank goodness for DirecTV's parental controls. In a way it's good though; with so much trash on the tube, it's just more motivation to steer the kids towards more constructive, less couch-potatoish activities.

They haven't taken Dan Rather off yet.
What makes you think that they are trying to edit anything.

...while I agree with you about a parents responsibility to oversee what their children watch , Many children are home for hours before parents are home from work.
Should we allow other things like sodomy, murder, rape?
Why, then do we even have an FCC paid for with our tax dollars?

It's their completely random nature that makes FCC decisions so exciting.

You never know whether the cheers are going to rise from the left or the right when they issue one of their "Because I said so!" decrees.

I think that everything should be allowed, but only at certain times (late at night). No, there should not be sex or violence on the tv during the day up until say 10 or 11 pm. Note that I inclued violence in this too. Jerry Springer should not be on at 3pm on a weekday when kids get home from school.

Why, then do we even have an FCC paid for with our tax dollars?

Because too many people in this nation want the government to shield their delicate ears from offense.

Owning a television or radio is not mandatory. Once you accept the awesome responsibility to do so, it should be up to you to see that your kids don’t use it inappropriately.

Same goes for gasoline, knives, guns, matches, swimming pools, beer, lawn darts, bicycles, stairs, plastic bags and oven cleaner.

I am not surprised the FCC is backing off on this issue, mainly because that by doing this, they are doing so premature CYA in that they do not want it to become more publicly known that the complaint that lead to the big multi-million dollar fine the FCC placed on Fox over the show "Married with Children" was NOT launched by over 90 people, but only 3 people who copied and sent that 3 different letters 30 times.

If this became more publically known, the FCC would become a laughing stock and would lose most of their reputation.

You are right...we shouldn't be paying the FCC to parent out children....

Here's an idea...don't like what is on tv? Throw it out the window.

FCC: It is your job, not the parent's, to monitor what networks will broadcast over the public airwaves.

....I would think seeing Janet Jackson's breast tame compared to this, but, few here see it the same way. SAD.

I didn't see her breast or whatever nonsense this group is complaining about. I just boycott by tuning out. Neither is acceptable.

My cable provider gives me to power to block any and all channels I want to. Instead of making all television suitable for children, why not have parents block those channels they don't want their children to watch?
