Or an email claiming someone's 59 year old grandpa was around before faxes or airconditioning.

Well, in 1950 both faxes and air conditioning were rather rare. I would say that air conditioning did not become common until the 60's, and faxes didn't really become common until the 70's.

As a school boy patrol traffic "officer" I and three friends from the 8th grade got a free trip tp D.C. to tour the capital sites.

We were part of a great number of other such students from schools all over. We were housed in a multi-storied hotel that had window A.C. units with the round face grilles that would change the air current direction when rotated; real state-of-the-art, we thought.
