What about the "Old North Church" in Boston? It's of course historic, it has an active congregation, and it's 230 years old. Surely it merits a coat of paint. Only Christianity is forbidden from state funds. Anything else is "OK". Discrimination against Christianity is so all-american according to liberals.

I am torn on this issue and other similar ones. I disagree with those fighting the funding and their reasons. But I also disagree with the government paying for historic preservation of a lot of things. Let private owners take care of such matters and if they can't raise enough interest in the historic items, places, etc... then maybe they should just be allowed to fade away.

I remember several years ago a thread on here about Wrigley Field. It is clear that the Cubs will one day have to play in a new stadium. What to do with Wrigley? Some FReepers thought the Federal Government should purchase it and maintain it. I said NO. Let the Chicago Cubs maintain it as a historic site and run it as a tourist attraction, or let another private owner do it. But at the end of the day if it came down to Wrigley being demolished or the Federal Government sinking untold millions (and likely billions after several years), I say let the wrecking ball swing.

Does that mean that Notre Dame, Georgetown, Villanova..., are not eligible to receive federal education funding since they are Catholic Universities ?

It will be most interesting to see Barbara Boxer's response to this.

As usual, the Unitarian Universalists are at the heart of another attack on "real" churches. Among the plaintiffs is a San Diego woman, identified as "Betty Doe," a Unitarian church member who says she opposes government money being spent to repair houses of worship.

They will use any means necessary to separate any public involvement from any church involvement.

Our local Unitarian Universalist Church of South Orange County is lead by a Pagan and an Atheist, and the Minister is currently a Tao Buddhist. They were showing "Bush's Brain" and other anti-Bush movies in the lead up to the election, yet they still operate as a 501(c)(3).

Yet all these people are, are a bunch of Liberals who get together on Sundays and donate tax-free money to their favorite liberal causes, like when the UUCSC (the local one) sent their minister on the "Marriage Equality Caravan" to Washington D.C.

How are these overt political activists allowed a tax-exempt status!?

ARRRRRGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

"Two years ago, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., wrote the California Missions Preservation Act, which authorizes the Interior Department to give the $10 million to the California Missions Foundation, provided it matched the amount. The foundation, which oversees mission restoration, has raised $3 million. "

The company you keep Babs.....

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of California taxpayers

Works for me.

Now if we can only get the government to stop forcing us to pay the BILLIONS for their illegal aliens.

I understand the principle, but I think that historical preservation is a valid function of government. All things in proper balance.

Maybe it should be the proper function of the government of California instead of the US Federal Government.

And yes, historical preservation is a proper function of government. No doubt. Independence Hall. The Liberty Bell. Gettysburg and other civil war battlefields. USS Constitution. Things like that.

But the amount of "historical" preservation that is being paid for by the federal government is far beyond "proper" scope.

The missions are the major part of CA's history.

The funding serves important, non-religious goals that are fine under the court's interpretation of the first amendment.

I would think so, but I have yet to figure out how it is ok for one to use the GI Bill to go to a religious institution but school vouchers for elementary education can not go to a religious school.

The missions are the major part of CA's history.

Then let the residents of California pay for it.
