Bush Picks Johanns to Head Agriculture Dept

WASHINGTON — President Bush on Thursday announced that he has chosen Nebraska Gov. Mike Johanns to be the new secretary of agriculture to oversee the nation's farm and food programs.

"As a son of Iowa dairy farmers, he grew up close to the land," Bush said in the Roosevelt Room at the White House in announcing his nomination. "He will bring to this position a lifetime of involvement in agriculture and a long record as a faithful friend to America's farmers and ranchers."

A Republican, Johanns, 54, also took the podium crediting his farm experience.

"I'm very proud of my ag background. I do feel that those years on that dairy farm did much to define who I am as a person," he said.

Johanns thanked the president, saying it's "a privilege and an honor" to be nominated.

"Mr. President, you've said agriculture is the cornerstone of our economy and the strength of agriculture contributes to the strength of our great nation," Johanns continued. "If confirmed by the Senate, I look forward to advancing your rural agenda for the 21st century."

Maybe I haven't been paying attention, but I don't recall anyone from Nebraska being appointed to a Cabinet for a long, long time. Because Nebraska is such a faithful Republican-voting state, it is rarely visited during campaigns or even during administrations.

IMHO, you can't get a much better person than a Nebraskan.

Wasn't Rove trying to peal off a Nebraska DIM Senator for this spot? I may have my states mixed up. But if not, maybe the the bus left sooner than the DIM expected.

I am overjoyed with the President's choice. Nebraska has a lot of great folks.

Too bad none of the Democrats have ever visited the State!

Go Huskers!

I think this is payback for delivering so consistently for the GOP. Johanns is a good solid Republican governor, although I was hoping he would challenge Upchuck Hagel for the GOP senate seat next go-round. I'm not sure how they go about replacing a vacant governor's chair either ...

I expect Mike Johanns will do a good job as Sec of Ag.

I hope the state boards get updated so I can subscribe to others than the one in which I reside. I wanted to post on the Nebraska board; can someone else? Thanks!

I hope other FReepers can correct me, but at first blush this sounds like bad news.

Johanns would not run for the Senate after serving in the Cabinet just 12-18 months. Therefore, the appointment is virtual proof that he will not run against Nelson. I just hope the administration didn't make this appointment until they were damned sure Johanns didn't want to run.

If Tom Osborne will be running for guv. instead, it looks like we may have exhausted our bench. Even in a solidly red state, you can't beat somebody with nobody. Looks like the 2006 recruiting cycle is off to a bad start, folks.

Yah, the hope was that Ben Nelson might be lured to this job and let Johanns appoint the GOP senator.

I agree. This concerned me, because he was thought to have an advantage over Nelson. This is a senate seat we need to win. I'd prefer to see Osborn in the Senate.

Perhaps Bush still thinks he can get along just fine with the Senate Democrats. I don't think he worked hard enough on recruiting good candidates last time, and it hurt us. We could have won several more Senate seats, but didn't have the right candidates. He will come to regret this, if he doesn't have the brains to regret it already.

Johanns wouldn't have accepted the job if planned on running for Senate in 2006.

My question is whether he's the current governor and how is his replacement determined?

"If confirmed by the Senate, I look forward to advancing your rural agenda for the 21st century."

Then get the President to sign some (bleepin) Executive Orders to STOP RURAL CLEANSING!!!

Get a case to the SCOTUS that revisits "Cows Don't Vote!"

Stomp on some of these Non Profit NGO land grabbin CONservancies who keep yankin vast tracts off the danged local tax rolls to provide nothing but playgrounds for city slickers out of what has been productive private properties!!!

Get our timber farming industry back in business... full time! Heck, if little Tommy Dashole did it for South Dakota, why can't you turkeys do it for America? You are the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, afterall!!!

Take a lesson from James Watt of the Reagan Administration! Stop all these Europe idolizing weasels from tearing away at all our great American traditions, customs, culture and economic stability! After all, we didn't have a Declaration of Independence from the old country, just to turn back and try to emulate all their failed Socialism Crappola!!!
