WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush is offering an in-person thank-you to U.S. troops next week with a visit to Camp Pendleton in California.

Soldiers from Camp Pendleton have been dying almost daily in Iraq. Among their missions, Camp Pendleton Marines were among the thousands of U.S. and Iraqi troops that fought recently to secure the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah.

Bush will deliver a speech and have lunch with troops while at Camp Pendleton on Tuesday, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Thursday.

"This is an opportunity to thank the troops for all their service and sacrifice in defense of freedom," McClellan said. "I expect the president will talk about the progress we're making in the war on terrorism as well."

Actually, I think that Christmas in Iraq or Afghanistan would be a wonderful gesture to our troops. The President went the first year of the war at Thanksgiving. Many in the press hinted that he only did it for campaign reasons. A trip now would prove them wrong, and more importantly give a morale boost to our brave soldiers.

It is kind of hypocritical: The President will lunch with these guys who are then sent to Iraq and Afghanistan, possibly to be injured or killed. On the other hand, he could go 60 miles south and watch hundreds of infiltrators come across the Border at night. Can you tell a Hispanic from an Arab?

anyone know where he's going to land, at Pendleton itself, Miramar or North Island? I'd like to see if we can do some overpass signs, if possible.

Probably Miramar because I don't think Pendleton's field can handle the 747 and Miramar's the closest to Pendleton with a major airfield.

I "freeped" Clinton on Miramar Rd at the west gate during impeachment when he was on his way to a fundraiser. I was only a lurker here at the time I think. I still remember his pasty , blotchy skin and his lustful leer at the big-bossomed brassiere-free black supporters who showed up last minute to cheer him on. I wonder if anyone from here was there. I remember a "Resign Swine" sign someone painted. :)

I want to do a freeping of Bush over the immigration/border fiasco. Maybe, "Support the Troops: Secure the Border"

President Bush could start, "thanking the troops" with the pardon of Lt. Pantano.
