Sen. John Edwards is drawing a curtain on his U.S. Senate career this week with a tour of the state. He's billed it as a chance to thank Tar Heels and let them know "how honored I was to represent them."
It seems a little curious.
While Edwards made an earnest run at national office, conventional wisdom suggests that he might have fared better on the national scene than he did had he opted to seek re-election from North Carolina.
Edwards is one of the state's best and brightest. He's a very successful lawyer and a gifted politician. His fiery speaking style and good looks made him a rising star in the Democratic Party.

That is a sad commentary for the Old North State.
Goodbye Johnny. The train is leaving the station and Brokaw, Dashle, Kerry, Rather, et al are saving a seat for ya.
So I take this to mean that he won't be showing up for any future votes?
If he was the best and so bright, why wasn't the state going to re-elect him? They weren't because he wasn't.
" He's a very successful lawyer.."
yeah, ask any doctor.
The only thing johnny-boy has done was a dis-service to the great state of N.C. and line his barrister pockets.
Nothing to comment on here. John Edwards is an empty suit! His fifteen minutes of fame are over. End of story!!!
he was trolling for Vioxx "victims" at the concession speech
One's personal perceptions have a way of changing over time....especially when life-changing events impact close to home.
I wonder how he regards his wife's medical team?
Better yet, I wonder how they regard him!
Precisely. For the life of me, I cannot understand why they continue to push this guy as a winner; he wasn't going to win re-election here -- in fact, his favorability numbers have gone DONE since Kerry picked him for VP.
He only won ONE primary, despite working (and donating money and staff) in other primary states for over two years.
You notice that his "good-bye tour" only took 3 days; that's about the most time he's had for us in seven years.
Step 1: Get rid of his trial lawyer image
Step 2: Run for Gov. of NC
Regarding step 1, the Prof. is basically saying that Edwards needs to lie and create a false image of who he is.
Who?
"Best and brightest" cliche PUKE alert.
If he's their rising star, the Dems have a lot of recruiting to do.
All Edwards had to do was look in Jimmy Carters mirror to see his political future on the national scene.
I was wondering if he'd go for the governor's seat, but it won't work for him in 2008.
Whats more laughable is the quiet talk of Easley being a RAT star and possible Presidential candidate.
Edwards was the "victim" of his own ambition. If he had bided his time, been an attentive, dutiful, hard-working senator (instead of the absentee, do-nothing, out-of-touch one that he was) and made ran for re-election, he might have won (or maybe not, who knows. Maybe most likely not, given NC's conservative lean and it being a presidential year, but still). If he had, he would have been in a rather strong position to run in 2008, with 10 years of public office under his belt and showing he could survive re-election.
Instead, he was very impatient, wanted it all right away. In fact, if Kerry HAD won, the earliest Edwards' could have been president (providing Kerry won re-election and nothing "happened" to him to prevent him serving out his full terms) would have been 2012. So in all likelihood, the way I see it, Edwards has spoiled his chances for 2008, he's burned his bridges back home and it will be very hard for him to remain viable without some kind of public office.
