A Food & Drug Administration advisory committee raised questions yesterday about the safety and effectiveness of a patch developed by Procter & Gamble to increase the sex drives of women.
The committee will present its findings today to a panel of FDA officials. While not binding, the committee's recommendations typically serve as a bellwether for FDA approval.
The committee cited a research study that concluded a combination of the hormones progesterone and estrogen increased the risk of heart and breast cancer, and wondered if a different hormone, such as the testosterone used in P&G's Intrinsa patch, would produce a similar result.
The committee also raised questions about P&G's safety data, noting they include "only a very small number of subjects who have been treated beyond one year."
There are also questions about whether Intrinsa produces tangible results. A study found that women who used the patch had only one more sexually satisfying experience a month compared with women who were given a placebo.
"We expected to see the kinds of questions they are raising, and we'll be addressing them [today] at the meeting," said Elaine Plummer, P&G spokeswoman.
The patch is not expected to produce blockbuster sales, because the market for drugs treating female sexual dysfunction is about one-fifth of that for men, said Kat Lynch of Decision Resources.

The library also announced that Mr Clinton himself will get invoved in the day-to-day testing of the patch since he doesn't have anything better to do.
Mr Clinton's spokesman also said he would urge Congress to allocate $15B to the library for securing the proper subjects for the trials.
Mrs Clinton said, "Over my dead body."
Bill Clinton will corner the market......
Female dysfunction is about one fifth that of men....Lady's don't dysfunction..they get even......
"Tell my office I'm going home to water down Bill's heart medication."
Maybe he'll buy up the entire supply and hand them out to library visitors....as an incentive.
It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature.
Relating to His Library, is there any information on how many visitors and public reaction to the Double Wide?
Testosterone is NOTHING NEW. The delivery method is. Testosterone must be monitored by a Doctor as it can and will cause problems. And YES it can/will increase libido in women..as well as other things. Facial hair, deepening of the voice et al. This is a hormone used by sports people and body builders. It is also a very dangerous hormone when used wrong.
Haven's seen the numbers yet......probably b/c they're so insignificant.
Man, talk about your great finds. This is a winner.
Thanks for posting. A great addition to the thread.
Needed a belly laugh right about this time.
"Mr Clinton's spokesman also said he would urge Congress to allocate $15B to the library for securing the proper subjects for the trials."
"Mrs Clinton said, "Over my dead body."
This was a misquote by the reporter and editor.
Godzilliary's actual quote was, "Over, his dead body!"
Great!
"Tell my office I'm going home to water down Bill's heart medication."
Of, course the patch will be issues with these warnings (smirk).
