Don't blame him. While "only" 48% of Canadians describe themselves as anti-American, 68% of the frenchies really hate him. The good news is 28% of Canadians have a much healthier attitude towards the Americans.

I was amazed when a decade+ ago we were in Ottawa to visit the Canadian national gov't buildings and, by chance, crossed the river into Quebec to find that those who are all about dual languages had NO signs in English.

They lost me forever that day. I have no sympathy for them whatsoever. (Though I may have been predisposed because as a kid I found General de Gaulle to be obnoxious.)
