Let's back up...You've undoubtedly heard the report that Rather has communed with the spirit of Edward R. Murrow (I presume). The photo is legit. That Bush channels Winston Churchill is my gag.

President Bush holding a ghostly apparition....

What a unique picture! No way could the photographer have planned that perfect timing. Amazing.

It points out how we have to be right all the time, as W says, to stay safe.

Yes, it does. It's gotten to the point where it literally takes over a hundred agents, plus others on the advance team, to move a president. I don't mind a bit, but it is interesting to get a glimpse into all the hard work the Secret Service does.

I love history too, W-S, and especially esoteric, oddball trivia. (Not that your info today has been esoteric and oddball. LOL)

Do you know any place (internet, maybe?) that has the original floorplan of the the WH?

BTW, I was shocked when I first learned that ordinary folks from off the street could come calling at the White House. It seemed during Lincoln's term, he could hardly get any work done because people off the street would come to his office asking for favors, jobs, and whatnot. He wrote the Emancipation Proclamation in the telegraph room at the War Dept. where he could get some peace and quiet. (BTW, I used to work for a guy named John Hay who was the great grandson of Lincoln's personal secretary of the same name. At the time, I didn't consider this significant. Now I would have pumped him for information about his great grandad.)

I just drank some Trader Joe's Bedtime tea (ah, Trader Joe's!). It is wonderful. Has mint and other ingredients that make it taste well while being very fragrant.

Kind of reminds me of the "halo effect" the media photographers like to give to Bush when he eclipses the Presidential seal on one wall of the auditorium in the Executive Office Building. Those photos are contrived, obviously.

Here are a couple of really great quips by the President during his press conference with PM Martin. Go to this thread to read all of Dubya's quips in one article.

When a Radio Canada reporter said she would ask a question in French she suggested Bush use his translation earphone.

"Maybe I don't want to know the question," he replied.

Bush was asked if proposed Canadian legislation to decriminalize marijuana would be a problem for the Canada-U.S. border.

"It will probably affect those who use marijuana a lot more than it will affect the border," he said.

Man, Bush has been on fire during this Canadian trip! Pretty good quips for a guy that the media tries to portray as dim-witted.

I don't know for certain, but suspect that, for security reasons, the full floor plan of the WH may not be available online. Either that, or it might take some digging to find. Truman kept the original floor plan for the original part of the house. He added the Truman Balcony on the upper floor. I think one of the two wings was also built at that time -- the West Wing, I think, but am not certain.

They flew in his personal limo too. I thought it was weird at first, but after thinking about it for a while it makes sense. All the security in the world can't protect a president from fuel tampering or let's face it...a lemon on a bridge. They really can't take the chance of a breakdown.

The quips are great, aren't they. I think the real problem before now was that rotten Cretien, a provincial version of Chirac, for sure. As I understand it, Martin is eager to repair relations between the two countries. He issued the invite as soon as GWB was reelected, and, as these things go, the trip was somewhat hastily planned. At least that's the gist of what I picked up from skimming the news. With his resounding reelection victory, GWB has the wind at his back and it shows.

Looks like GW wanted Barney to sit or down, or stay. Notice Barney is doing nothing of the sort. I took one of my minidachsies to obedience school and you couldn't tell when he was in the 'down' position.(Noodles is a longhaired minidachsie.) So he'd eat the cheese treat and do as he pleased. These low to the ground guys are pretty tough.(Barney will fall madly in love with Miss. Beazley when she arrives. Pictures of that should be a great treat!

The stuff they fly in ahead of a presidential visit is amazing. They actually fly in a whole fleet of vehicles. The effort that now goes into moving a president is awesome. If you ever get a chance to see the special on the Secret Service, you should try to do so. It's an eye-opener. And it makes what happened in Chile even more shocking, because the Chileans had to have done it deliberately in full breech of advance planning.

"Are they making fun of Rather or just slamming Bush in some obscure manner?"

Hey there, :), good to see you. No, it was just the camera angle. The backdrop on that stage is a collage of all sorts of joint American & Canadian images. If you look at the first picture at post #16 you'll see the President standing before the same Churchill photo but this time it looks like he is about to pat the Prime Minister on the head. LOL

Hershey, I adore mini Dachshunds, especially the mini wirehaired variety. They are exceptionally cute dogs, but real dogs just the same, not foo-foo dogs.

...esoteric, oddball trivia.

BTW, My2Cents, I meant to post this comment earlier. What would life be like without esoteric, oddball trivia -- and the equally oddball characters who keep bringing the stuff up?! LOL!
