I thought Canada got their independence in 1867, which would mean they fought in WWI.

Rather than gaining independence all at once, Canada was weined from her mamas teat, so to speak. Indeed, she is not totally weined today.

For the most part, Canada is little more than 60 years old. An extraordinarly young country by any standard.
