Ukraine's opposition has vowed to keep up its efforts to oust Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych after he survived a no-confidence motion in parliament. It said it was now pulling out of talks to end the crisis over the disputed presidential poll and resuming its blockade of government buildings.
There were dramatic scenes as several protesters backing opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko stormed parliament.
They allege that massive vote rigging robbed their candidate of victory.
Going in
They broke through police cordons and into the parliament's lobby, shortly after lawmakers provisionally adopted a measure to annul Saturday's non-binding decision to declare the 21 November presidential run-off, in which Mr Yanukovych claimed victory, invalid.
The protesters were later pushed back.
Trying to calm the situation, parliamentary speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn pledged that MPs would not repeal its previous decision.
He said the session was getting too confrontational and would be resumed on Wednesday.
The opposition is expected to demand that the session proceed with the no-confidence motion.
As the crisis deepened, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana arrived in Kiev ahead of urgent mediation talks on Wednesday.
Mr Solana will be joined by Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski and speaker of Russian parliamentary speaker Boris Gryzlov.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court for the second day continued to hear opposition allegations of vote-rigging levelled by Mr Yushchenko.
'Symbolic victory'
After Tuesday's failed no-confidence motion, the opposition accused the authorities of trying to distract their supporters with the negotiations.
It said it was now stepping up its campaign of civil disobedience.
"We announce that we have broken off the negotiating process and we are resuming the blockade of Ukraine's government building," said Oleksandr Zinchenko, Mr Yushchenko's top aid.
The opposition's no-confidence motion called for a dismissal of the government to prevent anti-constitutional actions and separatism threatening the country's integrity.
A vote of no-confidence in the government would have no legal effect, but correspondents say it would be a big symbolic victory for Mr Yushchenko
Oksana Korotyuk, 35, journalist from Kiev "Formally we won independence 13 years ago, but it was nothing more than formal. Now it is really arriving. "We don't trust our authorities, but we hope very much the court will take the side of the people. I don't want it to support Viktor Yushchenko so much as to support the truth."
Freedom is contagious!
Bttt!
U nas v strane vse uslozhnyaetsya. Kommunisty predali eshche raz narod. Predstavlyaesh', segodnya Verkhovnaya Rada rassmatrivala vopros o tom, chtoby vyrazit' nedoverie general'nomu prokuroru, TsVK i otpravit' v otstavku Yanukovicha, a oni, svolochi ne podderzhali. Tak narod pytalsya vorvat'sya v zdanie Verkhovnoy Rady, no ikh uspokoil Yushchenko. Kak tak mozhno ved' narod uzhe na predele chelovecheskogo terpeniya, a oni, svoimi deystviyami, provotsiruyut? Derzhat'sya za vlast' vsemi silami i sposobami.Seychas Verkhovniy sud rassmatrivaet zayavlenie Yushchenka o priznanii vtorogo tura vyborov nedeystvitel'nymi. Chem zakonchitsya ehtot sud, neizvestno. Ya boyus', chto nachnetsya grazhdanskaya voyna, vse idet k ehtomu. V Kieve uzhe bol'she milliona lyudey priekhali iz drugikh regionov i stoyat na Maydane nezalezhnosti.
"Things are getting more complicated in our country. The communists betrayed the people once again. Imagine, that today the Supreme Council (parliament) looked at the question of declaring to the attorney general's office that the TsVK (central election commission) was untrustworthy, but those bastards (the communists) wouldn't support it. Then the people tried to break into the parliament building, but Yushchenko calmed them down. How can they (the communists) provoke things with their activities, when the people are obviously at the limit of human patience? They hold onto power with all their strength and means.
"Now the Supreme Court is looking at Yushchenko's declaration about acknowledging the second round of the elections invalid. How this court action will end is unknown. I fear that a civil war will begin, it's all leading to this. Already more than a million people have come to Kiev from other regions and they stand on Independence Square."
Wow. Thanks for sharing!

Nikolai Lukashevich, 61, pensioner from Rivne "You can see it's not right. The people in the court keep saying the same thing. They are trying to confuse us so that we will go home. "There was a moment when they could have taken the decision to make Yushchenko president, then they put it off. They should have declared him president long ago."
Zirka Menzetyuk, 50, children's writer from Kiev "We want a peaceful solution to this problem. The falsification was obvious and crude, so we are waiting for a just decision from the court. "It is difficult for me to have full trust in the court because I once brought a case before it and justice was not done."

Putin took time out from toasting Stalin to congratulate Yanukovych, while men in black with hammers beat journalists.

Putin is corrupted, I once held out hope for him. His KGB background is showing.
