Republicans and Sino-US ties

It is true that the Chinese society, government, and media tend to favor Democrats over Republicans in the U.S. political scene. The common paradigm is: “the Democrats are friendlier to China; the Republicans are hostile to China.” Very often, this tends to be true. But not always. Although I'm registered as Democrat, am anti-Republican, and am one who supports the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, I would like to offer an alternative analysis of the Republican Party that most Chinese are probably not exposed to. This analysis suggests that at the present time, the Republican Party does not pose a threat to China, and the Republicans may even be better for Sino-U.S. relations than the Democrats. Can this be possible? I think that in the current international strategic environment, the answer is yes.

First, we need to analyze the Republican Party in terms of its relation to foreign policy. How do we divide up the different wings of the Republican Party? There are primarily three wings.

Leaning towards the left wing, we have the moderate Republicans and pro-Big Business Republicans. The Big Business Republicans may be fiscally conservative, but with regard to international relations, many of them prefer a stable environment to do business in (exceptions being the military-industrial complex). Many of the investors and big corporate executives that do business in China tend to vote Republican, yet they also hope for a stable and constructive Sino-U.S. relationship. They tend to hold a more flexible attitude towards China and do not want ideological differences and Cold War antics to impede their business interests. Moderate Republicans, both Big Business and ordinary, are also more open-minded than their more conservative counterparts.

Not only that, but they have NUKES pointed at the West Coast (even if it is just Hollywood, it's still our territory.)

Even "60 Minutes" proved that they have been making products with slave labor and dumping them here in America, in violation of their treaty with us.

How can we allow such a country to dump their slave-labor junk in our country to get money to support their military buildup that is aimed against us? We should embargo Red Chinese goods, or at the very least put a tariff on them so high that no one will ever buy their stuff again.

Its sad there are US citizens among us who think in terms of "us against them", with the "us" meaning they & communist china, and "them" being their host country, the United States.

the realists have re-assessed Sino-U.S. relations after 9-11 and prefer a stable & constructive relationship, even willing to tell Chen Shuibian to keep his mouth shut.

If only Hu Jintao could keep his mouth shut.

No, its not. I note that the PRC was not particularly reasonable with Clinton, they just thought they could buy him (and they were not wrong). Regardless of which party runs the country the PRC considers the US an advesary which must be defeated to bring China into it's rightful place in the world: the One True Hegemon. The PRC's strategic goals are not mitigated one whit by US elections, though their tactics will vary slightly.
