Police urged to ignore hunting ban

SEVENTY per cent of the public believe the police should not enforce the ban on hunting when the legislation comes into effect in February.

An opinion poll, conducted for a Sunday newspaper, found that seven out of 10 of those questioned believed that police officers should concentrate on other areas of crime once hunting with hounds becomes illegal.

Only 20 per cent said that they thought the police should be used to enforce the ban. Seven per cent said that officers should give equal emphasis to tackling hunting and other crimes.

Cumbria police have not revealed how they would enforce a hunting ban. Assistant Chief Constable Graham Sunderland said: “When the law comes into force we will police it sensitively and any response will be proportionate.”

The poll, commissioned by the Sunday Telegraph, also found that half the public supported the ban, while 35 per cent opposed it.

A Countryside Alliance spokesman said: “In the light of this poll, the Government should consider very carefully its advice to the police and Crown Prosecution Service in the period after February 18.”

A Tory environment spokesman said he feared the ban would be unenforceable.

ICM, who conducted the poll, interviewed a random sample of 1,000 adults aged 18 and over from across the country.

Well, if your govt keeps placing restrictions on your behavior, it helps to keep your police from cracking down.

I need to get reading glasses. At first, I thought it read 'legislature', not 'legislation'.

Should not pass this silly law in the first place. Passing laws for politicial idology then telling police not to enforce them is simply silly.

England is 200 years of history unhampered by progress.

Is this just for fox, or for game birds, too?

Imagine having to teach a cat how to point & flush...

It's fox hunting with hounds with the gentry on horseback. It's the proletariat getting revenge on the bourgeoisie and capitalist classes. Tony Blair is throwing one of the few bones he got to the masses.

What I don't like about England is their prohibition against dogs. Whenever I go to London I have to leave my dog at home, or put him in jail while there. It's as if they have never heard of vaccines. The Brits are a bunch of sissy wankers.

The UK is rabies-free, so they don't need to vaccinate their pets against the disease. They quarantine your dog to ensure that no vector for the disease enters the country.

Would you allow British cattle to enter the US without a similar quarantine period?

Besides, the coppers would have to have horses to catch them, eh?

or go to France. There they let their dogs in to the bar to take a dump on the floor.

Where dogs are people and people smell like dogs.

Maybe the local constables have all terrain vehicles?

"They quarantine your dog to ensure that no vector for the disease enters the country."

A certificate for a current rabies vaccination should be enough. Quarantine is overkill. The spread of rabies through house pets is negligible, and that is even though there are no laws requiring rabies vaccinations for dogs. It's a stupid law.
