Football Fans Wear Blaze Orange to Honor Slain Hunters
The Rice Lake business community, near the scene of the November 21st killings of six hunters, asked Green Bay Packers fans to wear blaze orange to the Monday Night Football game in honor of the shooting victims.
Thousands of fans responded in an overwhelming fashion. From the earliest tailgaters to many of Lambeau's parking attendants, the Packers famed green and gold colors had to share the spotlight Monday night.
"It was a tragic thing. We're just here to pay tribute," one fan in orange said.
Generally, blaze orange is not an uncommon sight at Lambeau Field late in the season as fans try to stay warm. This night, though, it held a much deeper meaning. Thousands of fans donned blaze orange in a show of respect for the six hunters shot to death last week in Sawyer County.
"Wasn't even a thought. My friend told me about it and I threw off my Packer hat and put on the blaze orange hat," said fan Tom Fields from Stevens Point.
"We support them, and hopefully this will be resolved and everything will be straightened out," said Bob Toye, a parking attendant at Lambeau Field.
All night long, the blaze orange was impossible to miss. Even a St. Louis Rams fan from Missouri was touched by the tragedy. Allen Hall said, "First snap, it's on -- Green Bay versus St. Louis -- but we're all brothers when it comes to hunting."
In Wisconsin, the Packers and deer hunting are two sacred traditions. Monday night, football provided the joy and a chance for the masses to show their hearts are with those in Rice Lake.
"It's a difficult situation. I can't imagine what those families are going through," Dave Trebiatowski from Plover said.
By asking fans to wear blaze orange, the people of Rice Lake also hoped to raise awareness of and encourage donations to the Rice Lake Hunters & Victims Fund. Donations can be mailed to:
Hunters Survivors & Victims Fund

Contributions will help the families cover medical and funeral expenses.
Diversity is our greatest strength!
Nifty. Now we know!
Wisconsin doesn't have the death penalty. I think permanent isolation is a worse penalty anyway. Or it would be for me.
Yeah, orange is required in WI and MN and many other states here in the midwest.
Hey, if you'd follow my shoulder workout
regime, you could be playing for the RAMS!
THOUGH THEY NEED A HEAD COACH W/ A BRAIN.

Actually, decapitation and having the axe man
hold your head up by the hair allowing you to
survey your headless corpse.

I think it's a good idea. Lots of folks around here don't wear any. So far the only hunters shot this year weren't wearing any orange.
I wear a blaze orange camo jacket and I've had deer and elk stare right at me and not be able to make me out. I'd rather take the chance on spooking an animal than to get shot at.
LOL... Better duck, incoming cheese.
whats more important than getting a deer?
not getting mistaken as one.
Strange coincidence *ping*
Yep, football stadiums and an SKS do sort of ring a bell.
Here's the report I was looking for earlier.
Thanks, rogue. I had the game on my little black and white tv that I normally use for camping - my color tv isn't pick up that channel at the moment. Sorry I missed it.
