Iran Has Not Abandoned Enrichment Tuesday, November 30, 2004

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran (search) has not abandoned its right to enrich uranium as the suspension it agreed to with the U.N. nuclear agency is for several months, Iran's top nuclear official, Hassan Rowhani, said Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters, Rowhani hailed the resolution passed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (search) on Monday which authorized IAEA head Mohamed ElBaradei (search) to monitor Iran's commitment to freeze uranium enrichment activities. Such enrichment can produce either low grade fuel for nuclear reactors or the raw material for atomic weapons.

The resolution followed a Nov. 7 agreement on suspending enrichment activities that France, Germany and Britain negotiated with Iran to stave off tougher action by the U.N. watchdog, which could have referred Iran to the U.N. Security Council for possible sanctions.

"This new situation is a turning point in Iran's nuclear case because, for the first time, the (IAEA) board of governors acknowledged Iran's right to peaceful nuclear activities," Rowhani said.

Well, golly gee! Yesterday the IAEA announced that Iran had promised (really, really, really promised) - swearing on a stack of Korans, that they would be good boys and girls and not play with the dangerous bad ole toys anymore! The Euros even said the Iranians and promised, too! I mean.....if the Eruos and IAEA say that the promises are good enough for them......

PHHHHHHHHHHHHHHTTTTTTTTTTTTT! Yeah, right. Trusting the word of the mad mullahs in Tehran is about as smart as having a wolf guard a flock of sheep! I'll bet we could tell the Euros and IAEA that Little Red Riding Hood was a true story, and the fools would believe it.

You mean the reports of Iran's elimination its nuclear weapons development program is just smoke and mirrors?

When will these Eurotards finally pull their collective heads out of their asses and wake up?? Is there something in the water over there that gives them amnesia? Or makes them retarded? Appeasement in the form of the Munich Agreement didn't work for Chamberlain in 1938 and it won't work now. You cannot appease fanatics and lunatics. I would say "F" all of Europe but we have a stake in this too.

This is another N. Korea in the making. God help us if the Iranian lunatics get their hands on a nuclear device that can be mounted on their long range ICBM. Meanwhile back at the UN the stonewalling on the Oil For Food Scandal continues, and the biggest decision the delegates have to make is which holiday party to attend. Decisions...decisions.

Please explain why all the light-hearted commentary here kiddies. All the "If this..." and If thens...". Or is this just standard "gallows humor"?

Please do tell where you stand on Iran and nuclear proliferation before we get into a discussion. It always helps to have an opinion before you start asking questions of others.

Or if you prefer, we can always talk about Iran and freedom of the press.

Five webloggers jailed
Reporters without borders ^ | 11/30/04

Reporters Without Borders has strongly protested against the Iran's relentless efforts to stifle free expression online after the arrest of five webloggers in less than two months, the latest on 28 November 2004.

"The government is now attacking blogs, the last bastion of freedom on a network that is experiencing ever tighter control," said the worldwide press freedom organisation. "At the same time, an Iranian delegate is sitting on a UN-created working group on Internet governance. The international community should condemn this masquerade," it added.

Three webloggers identified only by their first names were arrested on 29 October 2004. They were : Dariush (http://www.dariushkabir.com), Omid (http://www.shurideh.com) and Payvand (http://gayaneh.net).

Mojtaba Saminejad was arrested at the beginning of November for speaking out against the arrest of his three colleagues in his blog (http://man-namanam.blogspot.com).

Farid Modaressi, a member of the student organisation the Office to Consolidate Unity, was arrested on 28 November on the order of the prosecutor's office in the city of Qom. He had posted a number of articles on his weblog (http://farid.blogset.com) exposing persistent harassment in the city by members of the conservative movement. Two of his brothers were reportedly arrested two days earlier and are apparently still being held.

The crackdown also continues against news websites. Hamed Motaghi, editor of Naqshineh.com, a webzine in Qom, was sentenced on appeal on 18 November to a three-month suspended prison term for "publishing false information with the aim of disrupting public order". His site has been inaccessible in Iran since March 2004.

Five cyberjournalists - Mahboubeh Abbasgholizadeh, Fershteh Ghazi, Javad Gholam Tamayomi, Omid Memarian et Shahram Rafihzadeh - are still imprisoned for contributing to reformist websites.
