Ping!

I WANT to know and take care of my own car maintenance! I hate more than anything going into an oil-change place and feeling like they're scammin' me.

You think I could change the oil myself on a Bug?

Yep! My sweetie is sitting here snickering about this thread. She's MY mechanic, having performed all routine maintainance, including oil changes, on everything we own. this includes 2-Benz, 3-Nissan 300zx, Explorer, 2-Volvo, and an odd assortment of Isuzu's which she loves to play with(they are turbo rice rockets). She replaces starters, does brake jobs, and other misc small repairs. the big stuff, is usually done at a friends shop, with his help! I watch, but usually get run off for kibitzing...

The bug is simple if it an old one, but if you need help, get a manual from Chilton or Haynes, and give it a try...

Nothing ventured... nothing learned!

Go to your local Autozone, get one of these, plus the oil collector pan (plastic, six bucks) and the oil and filter. You'll be fine.

Oil is pretty easy, changing the coolant is tricky.

Just kidding.

Not only can you change you own oil...you should change your own own oil...
Your VW will think it's romantic and sweet of you, and it'll be nice to you for months afterwards!...hehe

As fer your electrical nightmare in the Aerostar, I'd follow the posted suggestions. I'm not much of an electrician.

Try the light socket first. If that's not it take a spare afternoon (hehe), and try tracking down the wires that live on that fuse that keeps blowing.

Females: Use a manual or electrical schematics.

Males: Putter around for hours on end without looking at the directions.

One wire is probably bare somewhere. Nudity is bad in the whitehouse and electrical wires. If a wire gets exposed and touches metal, you'll have vicious electrical gremlins.

Also, keep looking for your VW!

For motivation for you, I went to get the tags renewed on mine today at lunch.
After an hour and a half of stadging in a surly line, I got new stickers for my buddies.

VW Bus and VW Bug tags: about $40 dollars each...

Laughing at the blonde college gal who cried as she credit carded $1300.00 dollars...Priceless

I don't value changing my own oil, and I know how.

The Jiffy Lube places not only do it for not alot more than the price of oil and filters, they check the levels on other fluids and top them off.

But the biggest reason to not change oil at home is the mess of it. You'll take all morning and end up with a mess and the problem of what to do with the used oil.

There are a lot of things that are worth doing yourself, but I don't think oil changes are one of them.

Dont listen to them. If you need a manual to do an oil change you probably shouldn't be doing it yourself in the first place.
