Brandon Singleton was 8 when he first saw the movie "Clueless," and it changed his life.
He was entranced by the paradise of teenage consumption that the 1995 film portrayed, a Hollywood world of valet parking and designer duds. So when he entered Suitland High School in Prince George's County four years ago, he was determined to make it his reality.
Now 17, he wears Armani sunglasses inside his mother's modest townhome on a recent afternoon as he rattles off a list of his favorite designer brands: Dolce & Gabbana, Coach and "a little Burberry here and there." His first luxury purchase was a pair of shiny black Gucci pants that he bought freshman year for $450 -- all the money he had received for his 14th birthday.

Sorry if this has already been posted, but I did a search and couldn't find it.
This was front page (below the fold) in today's Washington Post. Can you say "slow news weekend"?
I wonder if the story would be so sweet and fun if the subject was an older white male who was spending his money on an SUV or other evil materialistic things.

Any young man who gets that hung up on brand names needs to spend a few winters in the Midwest. Might make a man out of him yet.

And the wheel in the sun keeps on turning...this same thing happened back when I was a teenager in the 80's (anyone remember Ocean Pacific, Izod?); then predictably the 90's grunge thing happened, and kids rejected designer labels. I give the 2004 label thing a few more years, then the backlash will begin. Same old, same old.

Of course, then he'd just be interested in
different brands... LL Bean, Orvis and Wolverine.

My teenaged daughters and their friend would call him a 'label slut' or a 'brand whore'. Not compliments applied to a girl, and far more insulting when used of a boy. He looks like a cross between Marlon Brando in The Lost Weekend (the pose) and Queer Eye for the Queer Guy. A regular Poof, as they Brits would say.

Yeah, I can't imagine why they're not running follow-ups on the latest revelations about Kofi's son receiving money in Oil-for-Fraud.

Gotta have a 'gay' story on the front page every weekend.
I thought the SF Chronicle was the worst because of the way they worked so hard at getting a 'gay' story on the front page of their paper every weekend, but now its daily. It started when Reagan was still President. They would have a gay cover to their Datebook section every weekend. Then their main Sunday paper had the 'gay' stories, then it went to EVERY day.
These people can NOT get over themselves.

One nice thing about Catholic School, is the most popular label is Flynn & O'Hara. In fact, it's the only label.
