No. 1 Trojans live up to top billing against Irish

LOS ANGELES - For one quarter, Notre Dame was better than No. 1 Southern California.

Then the Trojans got serious and the Fighting Irish had no chance.

Matt Leinart made a big pitch for the Heisman Trophy, passing for a career-high 400 yards and a school record-tying five touchdowns, and the Trojans overcame a sluggish start to beat Notre Dame 41-10 on Saturday night.

The third annual USC/ Notre Dame scrimmage once again went according to form, with the Irish putting up just enough resistance to keep the Trojans honest, in preparing them for UCLA next week and a good team to follow in the bowl game. Once again 31 points separated the two teams, for the third straight year, and the image of quality football at Notre Dame continues to become just a fading memory, like a grainy black & white newsreel of Kunte Rockne and the Four Horsemen. Last night the filmstrip broke and we were left with a jarring, out of focus image of the team that couldn't shoot straight.

Despite the rain and cold, I sat in the far reaches of the Los Angeles Coliseum and enjoyed every minute of the spectacle. Especially the site of all those Irish fans filing out of the stadium with heads down well before the final gun had sounded.

In a somewhat disappointing note, I have read many a posted article here about breathless accounts of Notre Dame wins this season over the likes of Michigan and Michigan State, but a search strangely turned up no results for this game. I guess an embarrassing loss to USC now is considered so commonplace it's not even news anymore.

Notre Dame's tailspin can be traced to the butt kicking they got from OSU, that's Oregon State Univerity, a few years ago in the Fiesta Bowl.

And did Notre Dame really beat Tennessee, at Tennessee just a couple weeks ago? The same Tennessee that is to provide such a 'stern test' for Auburn, in that powerhouse SEC conference. Gimme a break.

Good for you! I would like to express an honest thought here. As conservative folks here we often complain about celebrities trashing Republicans, and how stupid it is to alienate half the audience. Republicans being half way between Reptile and Repugnant comes to mind. Hugh is a smart guy, I listen to him often, but his constant knocks on SC are simply not funny and as dumb as can be for a talk show based in Southern California. It would be one thing if he had gone to UCLA and bashed SC, or if he actually went to either Notre Dame or Ohio State, but he went to where, Harvard? And Michigan, which he runs down also.

I guess Hugh must think that it's funny and good natured, but the unnecessary Notre Dame, Buckeye, and Cleveland smack makes him sound like the spoiled son of the radio station owner who somehow got his hands on the microphone and managed to get on the air. Even my oldest brother, the UCLA fan, agrees with me!

I hate the rubbers with every fiber in my body. Still it's good to see the Pac 10 kicking tail...

Anytime the domers lose...is a good time, IMO.

Being an ex-Calif....I still root for tail-back U. But, since moving to Okla...I morphed into a Sooner fan. I'm hoping to see a USC / OU game to close this college gridiron season.

We shall see, what we shall see.....

Wasn't it the University of Oregon that humiliated Notre Dame in that bowl?

Thus, my motivation for the nature of the bet.
That he wear the USC cap in public.

Notre Dame will be fine, probably as soon as next year. They showed signs of turning it around this year, beating Tennessee, Michigan, and Michigan State, and then having close losses against Boston College and Pitt, who are decent. SC is just really good, and there is still the lingering bitterness at SC over Notre Dame beating them something like eight years in a row in the 90's, so they'll run it up on Notre Dame if they can. And they did. Again.

It was eleven years in a row, and unbeaten over thirteen, with one tie thrown in there. And if SC really wanted to run up the score, they could have put 60 on the board each of the last three years.

Enjoyed the game immensely~! I am glad I didn't have to sit through the rain. Went to the Cal game earlier in the year and felt that Cal was a better team. Hope they go to the Rose Bowl. It would be nice to see the Trojans put a complete game together sometime this year! Go Trojans...beat UCLA!

Yeah, you are probably right. I think it was UCLA that beat them eight in a row during the same stretch of years, when SC was down. So I hope SC has another rout in it's bag of tricks waiting for the Bruins next week as well. Maybe Michael Moore can show up wearing his UCLA cap to root for the Bruins.

Also, remember last year, last regular season game, when Notre Dame played a mediocre Syracuse team? If Notre Dame wins, SC goes to the BCS title game on strength of schedule. Notre Dame sleep walks through the game, SC misses out.......................and SC fake punts up 34-10 in the fourth quarter yesterday. A beautiful thing.

Orange is the nastiest color in the rainbow. We live in Tennessee and if I hear That stupid Rocky Top one more time I will scream very loud.
